Are Labour still in “send” mode?

David Blackburn 6:30pm

Perhaps it was the barnstorming success of #welovethenhs, or the opportunity to create another Tsar, but Douglas Alexander has appointed Kerry McCarthy MP as ‘Labour’s Twitter Tsar’ ahead of the next election.

In an interview with Labour List, McCarthy says she wants to emphasise that, “Rather than being something completely new, campaigning using new media is simply doing what we’ve always done in a new setting.” I’m intrigued to see how the government distils its ‘raft of measures’ into a tweet of 140 characters.

McCarthy’s interview also suggests that Labour may have confused “sending” with “receiving”. As Robert Colvile said in a paper to the CPS, the internet is all about receiving:

‘The web could also re-empower MPs, by linking them far more directly to the concerns of their constituents. Most have, so far, failed to grasp this opportunity. The parties could reverse this by altering their mindset from “send” to “receive”, by learning the lessons of unofficial organisations such as bloggers, activists and campaign groups which have exploited the potential of the internet.’

But McCarthy is stuck in “send” mode. Her emphasis is on MPs talking to the people, putting their human side forward, rather than engaging with the public:

“You can connect with people. It's like when MPs are in their constituencies, people always go away with a much better impression when they've met someone face-to-face and realise that not all politicians are the way we are characterised in some parts of the media”

Labour might yet make a success of the new media, but what are the chances in the short term? For all the engaging blogging of Tom Harris and Tom Watson, it seems Brown would rather use the internet to issue his latest diktat from the bunker – complete with comic facial expressions and gesticulations redolent of Hammer Horror.

This is such typical socialism (sigh of exasperation).
"We will tell you what to think/do/say because only our way is correct;
we will spend your money on what we want, not what you want, because only what we want is right;
we don't need to know what you think because we know better than you about everything;
but we have to spend a lot of your money on telling you that we know best because you're too thick to understand."

The government's 'raft of measures'.

As in putting to sea in a desperate attempt?

With more slaughter of our troops in Afghanistan. One would have thought that this blog would have concentrated on the plight of our troops.

The utter incomptetence of the worst Defence Secretary in living memory and the need for a proper debate, led by The Prime Minister in a recalled Parliament.

If we are at war then place this country on war footing!

One would have hoped Cameron would adopt a far more critical stance against Brown and his cowboy cabinet. Demand to know the true facts of the injured, including the injuries. The compensation issue and an assurance that Brown will go to Nato and demand greater direct involvement from those continental countries who are reliant on the USA, Canada and ourselves.

Instead we are treated with this blog on a woman none of us can have heard of. Is this blog becoming a mouthpiece for Labour?

Please get your boot into Brown over Afghanistan.

Stuck in send mode is not true of Kerry McCarthy's hyper-engaged and personal blogging and twittering
http://kerry-mccarthy.blogspot.com/

It does, though, perfectly describe the Speccy's own twitter account, ironically

Wonder if she'll be taking tips from Labour's blogging maestro, Dapper Derek? That should ensure plenty of laughs - and smears, probably -for Guido to report.

In sheer anger I emailed John Reid today. I give him a right twittering. Why did our politicians allow "our boys" to get involved in Afghanistan?!The whole lot of them have copious amounts of blood on their hands. No doubt they'll be whimpering about "rations." The whole bloody lot of them make me sick to the pit of my stomach. Scum they are!!!!!!

Shouldn't it be Tsarina?

After all only wild eyed feminists insist on the neutral nouns as being the same as the male one.

They should embrace new media like the Cameroons and use toe curling publicity stunts like the Peoples Millionaire who invites you into his average family house to show what a normal family they are, well if you count a multi-million pound pad being owned by a multi-millionaire who accepts free flights from billionaires as being what normal families do.

We promise that we will continue to destroy Britain as successfully as we have done over the past 12 years.

That's only 106 characters. Easy really.....

Yoof does not twitter. Tweeting is for sad old middle-aged trendy wannabes. Worse than trendy Vicars, politicians who twitter as even less cool than Tony and Cliff with their guitars.

Kerry McCarthy's blog - My Blog = My Rules - is a clue to the "Demented Socialist in Government" mindset which has done so much to damage our society. She epitomises socialist wimmin. The slightly unhinged, self-satisfied and obtuse zealotry is apparent even in the photograph you selected for this piece.

I doubt NLab will be too adventurous in the social media field as it is exactly what it says: "social" media. It will invite feedback, rebukes, honesty, dissatisfaction and eventually annihilation.

I hope they do though.

This is so juvenile it would be laughable if not so serious. What with Purnell, Burnham, Milliband and now this silly woman Labour seems to be in danger of being taken over by a bunch of adolescents.

I see. So politicians cannot stop stuffing taxpayers' money into their own pockets and it's all the fault of the media.

Talk about shooting the messenger rather than addressing the message.

Labour really are pathetic.
