The loser from the Kevan Jones storm is Gordon Brown
Peter Hoskin 10:53am
Guido went there, and the newspapers decided to follow. After the political blogosphere's favourite son outed Kevan Jones as the minister behind the attempted smear campaign against Richard Dannatt, the defence minister gets namechecked in all of this morning's publications. Jones is, naturally, distancing himself from the accusations - but there are intriguing hints that Dannatt himself knows who the culprit is, and may act against him. This in today's Sun:
"The General knows the identity of the man behind the bid, The Sun can reveal. He has considered forcing his resignation."
If Jones - or any other member of the government - can be tied to the smear plot, then it's certainly a resigning matter. Our political representatives should have much better things to do than sullying the name of an Army chief who only has eight more days left in his job. Better things like administering to the conflict in Afghanistan, say.
But, even if resignations do come, you suspect that the real loser from all this would be - and could already be - Gordon Brown. One promise he allegedly made when hanging onto his Cabinet in June was that he'd stop briefing against his government colleagues. Sure, Dannatt isn't one of them. But this episode could reopen the old wounds, and convince some that Brown still presides over an operation built on smears and character assassination. Hardly the best platform for our PM ahead of conference season.

No doubt Brown will be apologising to the gay guy who cracked the Enigma Code, but not apologising to Richard Dannatt

Pre 1997 maybe, but not anymore I'd wager.

August 20th, 2009 11:41am Report this commentWhat blinking flip? Does the whole of Westminster have ADHD? McSnotty's gutless smearing of colleagues is not 'an old wound'. And that florid little turd McBride has only been on the naughty step for about half an hour. McSnotty himself is a walking case of anaemia on that front: as long as he's in office, the wound cannot heal.
Plus it's not like these guttersnipes haven't tried to take a pop at General Dannatt already - about a month ago, I recall.
And if you think McBride was the only - as opposed to merely the nastiest - assassin in McSnotty's closet, and that his removal 'drew a line under' the practices on which his master so obviously depends, then you're wrong.
At least Lord Mandelvort has the wit to attack the other team...

August 20th, 2009 11:45am Report this commentp.s. McSnotty is a convulsive political corpse, kept alive only by the Mandelson defibrilator simulating signs of life. He cannot conceivably 'lose' anything more. The actual 'loser' is, as it will continue to be as long as this nasty, malicious and uncouth shower of swine remain in office, British public life.

This is but one more nail in this governments coffin.

It has fallen to a soldier to point to the moral black hole that has engulfed nearly every aspect of public life since Blair, Brown and the podgy high priests of "progressive" politics tricked their way into government.

August 20th, 2009 1:58pm Report this commentIf Lord Foulkes is involved then you can be certain that Brown knows about it.
Foulkes is one of Labour's "Most Vicious", and he has had an axe to grind against the military ever since it became known that an ex-SAS man had facilitated the passage into the public domain of information - chapter and verse, in fact - about the extent to which MPs had been personally profiting from ransacking taxpayers' cash.
Foulkes is a nasty piece of work but - being a Labour peer - he would not have acted in this way against Sir Richard Dannatt without the prior knowledge of senior figures within the Labour government.
This administration clearly houses some extremely low and vicious characters, but if they are now seeking to denigrate the character and reputation of a man who is both better and braver than themselves, then they might be setting in motion a sequence of events which they will come to regret.

Jones has form as a chippy little oik with an impertinent curiosity about the domestic arrangements of senior officers.
He even asked a PQ about the Adjutant General's tennis court.
I suppose there could be two such figures in the current roster of MoD ministers, but if that's so, it makes matters even worse.
