The Lib Dems: not as nice as you think

David Blackburn 12:58pm

A story that has escaped largely unnoticed this weekend is the creation of the Liberal Democrat party's sinisterly named ‘anti-Tory attack unit’. Sam Coates has the details in the Times:

‘Nick Clegg has created an anti-Tory attack unit which will focus Liberal Democrat firepower on exposing George Osborne’s “complete inexperience”.

In an interview with The Times, Chris Huhne said that specialist staff will be seconded to the new group, which he will chair and will include all the party’s most effective attack dogs, including Norman Baker, Norman Lamb and Lord Oakeshott.

Mr Huhne, the party’s home affairs spokesman, will lead the party’s attack at their conference, which begins today in Bournemouth. He will highlight polling results by Populus for The Times which show that almost a third of Tory supporters are voting purely to remove Labour rather than out of enthusiasm for the Conservatives.

The Liberal Democrat leadership believes that more can be done to expose what they regard as Tory shallowness and peel off some of their support.’

After Cable’s Straight Talk interview, Huhne will have his work cut out convincing voters that Osborne is any shallower. Of course, all parties seek to undermine opponents, but, as Fraser notes, the key is striking the right balance. The Lib Dem’s strident, highly personalised rhetoric creates the sense that they are simply launching ad hominem attacks, not critical analysis. Clegg’s puerile denunciation of Cameron as “the conman of British politics” is a case in point. Obvious rhetorical smears only injure those that utter them: the Liberal Democrats have not learnt from the failure of their charmingly titled ‘Decapitation strategy’ at the last election.

Norman Baker, omg, the tories must be cacking themselves. Unless of course they have covered up some details on UFO's then they would have some worries about the scrutiny of Norman.

But the Lib Dems have always been the nasty party. Their local campaigning has always been based on throwing as much muck at the candidate they want to defeat as possible. What is of significance that this is the first time that they have nationally institutionalised nastiness because they are araid of the Tory love bomb and in paticular Cameron. It was amazing to see an open necked Clegg, doing a Cameronesque speech in front of a blue backdrop. Seeing him try, on the Andrew Marr Show, to weasel out of his clear rift with Cable over whether education should be ring fenced, was a jesuitical experience worthy of Dan Brown. Cable and Clegg have now become the Steptoe and son of British politics, tramping the streets for any old bits of tat they can sell to a gullible electorate.

Nick Clegg is a fool to attack Cammie in such a nasty way. I don't think it will resonate, it could push more soft Tories away from the Lib Dems.

Gordon Brown is the man he should be firing his bile at.

It was good to see how shallow Mr Cable's economic analysis is. My Mum thinks he is great, I've tried telling her that he is a lightweight but she doesn't believe me. The Daily Mail have been too kind to the man. Does he still think that "shorters" caused the banking crisis?

Reading Cameron's pathetic plea to the Liberal Democrats in forming an alliance, perhaps he is concerned that his support is not as strong as we are led to believe!

As for Clegg. One day he says he is aiming to fight Labour targets now this. His is a limited organisation, in finance and numbers. A good general will tell you never to fight on two fronts! Clegg has made his major error.

The tories, I do hope, withdraw their olive branch and fight them as hard as they fight Labour.

As for the 'attack dogs' Huhne is renowned for saying the most pathetic things and turning people off. and the others? God help them!

But can anyone support Cameron's article in The Observer? It tells me that he is NOT a conservative!!

I read Dave's piece in The Observer this afternoon and found myself in agreement with almost every word he said. He is genuinely liberal when it comes to social affairs - and he quite explicitly offered the Liberal Democrats an olive branch on this basis. I think that to repay him by setting up a childishly-named "Anti-Tory Attack Unit" really is beneath contempt - and far from showing up how shallow and immature the Tories are supposed to be, it in fact reflects precisely these qualities back upon the Liberal Democrats for establishing such a thing in the first place.

Beyond this, and the fact that I am in complete agreement with Dave when it comes to social matters, what struck me as being significant about the piece were the dogs that didn't bark. For example, Dave had nothing to say about those issues which most directly threaten the independence, unity and long-term survival of this country; namely, that other secretive, "backwards-looking" state-ist giant - the EU. He also had nothing to say about how we are going to reverse the tide of mass immigration which continues to sweep across this country and threatens to drown it altogether, nor about our relations with America (which are perhaps best summed up in the quisling Extradition Act 2003).

Dave had nothing to say on these matters, and until he speaks sensibly about them he will not be getting my vote.

Drakes drum, hopefully you are not a tory. You are the typical Col blimp blowhard that kept the tories in opposition for 12 years. Please go away and form your own party, I do not want you in mine.

I think it's difficult for Tory bloggers to get on their high horses about "rhetorical smears". Osborne has called Brown "faintly autistic" and Cameron has called him "mad".

It is precisely because Cameron is not Drakes Drum's idea of a 'conservative' that he attracts huge appeal from swathes of voters in Middle England.
Colonel Blimp had his uses but his day vanished about half a century ago.
Along with his stiff upper lip.

So the LimpDims are behaving at a national level in exactly the same way as they do in local politics. Quelle surprise.
I feel quite sick when I remember the wicked remarks made by them to voters about their Conservative opponents in our neck of the woods. Never in writing, of course, just little murmurs on doorsteps or over the phone.

Jim, these are not smears, they are diagnosis.

On a lighter note, with enemies like the Libdems, who needs friends?

And apparently they want the DNA of innocent people removed from the database, except for those acquitted of serious violent or sexual offences. So in this brave new world of British fascism the distinction between innocent and acquitted is drawn and the shit thrown against the wall really does stick. This is what happens when our laws become emotively applied and interpreted by hysterical wimmin, strident robber baronesses with shoulder chips and mad-eyed crusades fresh from their charity careers. Why not just make it the law that MEN charged with serious violent or sexual offences can only ever be found guilty and lock them up. That would really protect the vulnerable. Or even better, ditch the time consuming, wasteful trials completely and lock up any men accused of crimes or "unacceptable behaviour" against wimmin. It's just not fair that anyone guilty of these crimes should risk being acquitted by a court. Then when they've done their time - if they haven't served the mandatory life sentences that really should be imposed - make them wear yellow trianges on their clothes.

What a country these appalling lefties have made here. And the fact that the Lib-Dems are apparently jumping into bed with the fascists and attacking the only party that offers hope and liberation is equally appalling.
