Banging on about Europe will cost the Lib Dems seats

James Forsyth 11:46am

In his interview with the FT, Nick Clegg says that the Lib Dems have been too “reticent” about making Europe a dividing line with the Tories. There’s little doubt that Clegg, a former MEP is an ideological pro-European. But if he starts banging on about Europe he’ll cause his party problems.

The Lib Dems have several seats in the South West, one of the most Euro-sceptic regions of the county. As the European elections results there showed, when Europe is the issue the Lib Dems do badly. If Clegg really does intend to make Europe a key campaign dividing line, then the Tories will fancy their chance of picking up a fair few of these South Western marginals.

The odd thing about this conference is that the Lib Dem leadership keeps making policy changes which are, obviously, going to alienate important constituencies for them. They’ve downgraded their pledge on tuition fees which is going to hurt their student support, they’ve talked about ‘savage’ cuts which won’t endear them to the public sector professionals they were trying to woo, their new property tax is going to hurt them in the prosperous southern seats they are trying to protect from the Tories and now they want to emphasise Europe despite being a pro-European party which has a slew of seats in a heavily Euro-sceptic region. Calamity Clegg indeed.

Banging on about Europe might remind the voter of the referendum they promised last time.

Lib-Dems to go to the electorate on their support for European federalism?

Wey-hey! Bring 'em on!

Carry On Up the Lib-Dem Conference.

Perhaps we should all turn up on the last night and drop Nick Clegg into an enormous trifle (whipped up by Rhoda Klapp). That would provide a suitable finale to the proceedings.

They should have stuck with Ming. At least he has a mature head on his shoulders.

It's like they're trying everything to take themselves out of the game... bizarre, truly bizarre.

The whey-faced members of the Liberal Party should return to what they do well: looking intense and muttering self-righteous pieties. They should avoid concrete matters like tax - as they are never going to be in power it just makes them look silly.

There is a certain warm glow that comes from watching the Lib Dems commit Hari Kari in public and alienate vitually every voting bloc they possess. I bet Cameron connot believe his luck!

Cleggover's closing speech this afternoon had better be a blockbuster...

Clegg is more Dutch and Russian than he is a Brit anyway. His ancestress Moura Budberg was a Soviet spy, and Cleggie learnt his politics at the feet of Leon Brittain. Nuff said abt his European credientials, I think

These people are supposed to care about the environment and are always banging on about how we have to take more care of the world around us... but, they allowed poor Gilbert to die on the beach right in front of them!! How are we supposed to trust them with our votes?!

William Hague proved that tory Europhobia is a massive vote loser. If Clegg can succeed in reminding the electorate what the conservative party is like on Europe he stands to gain enormously. If anti-europeanism is so popular, why is Cameron so desperate to keep quiet about it?

Clegg really is going to do this! Due to his experience as an MEP, this is one of the few areas which he has relative expertise and based on his impromptu questions at Lib Dem conference he can bring Europe into all his answers. Good.

As an ex-MEP Clegg has an allegiance to the EU that is both party and personally based. He will collect a good pension from his former employer, so his constituents should wonder whose interests he really represents.

By the looks of things there isn't going to be a party to come close to the Tories at the election.
I don't think it strange one bit that both Labour & the Liberals with their VERY unpopular lefty views have become as popular as the plauge.
The best bit though is that, in no way can they change their lefty ways to win people over, how the Tories must be laughing.

Oh yes!!! do let them start talking about Europe and then we will all be reminded of their treachery over the referendum on the Lisbon/constitutional treaty.
Every time one of them has mentioned during this conference "straight talking" "being honest with the electorate" blah blah blah, I remember how treacherous they were over Lison and I am disgusted.

Paxman ridiculed Clegg on last night's Newsnight about the mixed messages emanating from the Lib Dem Conference. They have thrown away their last big chance before the election to look united.

I do believe I'm getting there.
Clegg is going to abolish tuition fees.
But he won't.
Because he can't.
So it will go in the Manifesto.
But it won't happen.
If you can't understand that you must be an idiot.

"Nick Clegg says that the Lib Dems have been too “reticent” about making Europe a dividing line with the Tories"

It isn't. Being the position of the Spectator, Telegraph or Mail does not make something the policy of the Conservative Party.

The Lib Dem leadership is putting too much stock into Vince Cable's economic credentials... if they lose him at the next election (as they well might) they will surely implode. The positions are not just at odds with their core constituency but also the party at large. In some senses it would be electorally better to have a completely unworkable fantasy land economic policy than attempt to credibly justify any of it - as Cable tried and failed this week with the mansion tax. In fact I can forsee them retreating to fantasy land when Cable's halo finally falls off completely.

The Lib Dems, along with Labour have shown themselves to be opposed to preserving British national sovereignty;and to support extending the EU as an enlarged instition to include 75 million Muslim Turks in the near future.

UKIP is rightly opposed. The Tories are tentatively talking about a Referendum on the Lisbon Treaty; they need to show greater commitment to opposing UK continued membership, in line with British public opinion.Where is the Tory opposition to Turkey's membership?

Neither Brown,Cameron or Clegg really know the depth of the electorates real feelings over this issue. If Clegg wants to write a suicide note for the Libs at the next election I suggest he reminds us all of how pro eussr he is and at the same time how brown managed to railroad the Lisbon treaty through Parliament with liberal support based on a lie.

You're wrong about Hague's election disaster. He was going to lose even if he appeared as God since God was already here in the guise of Blair.
But your second point is of merit. I think Cameron regards Europe as secondary.
I will not vote for him if he does not commit to a referendum but I wonder if people regard British independence and democracy as important.
