Banging on about Europe will cost the Lib Dems seats
James Forsyth 11:46am
In his interview with the FT, Nick Clegg says that the Lib Dems have been too “reticent” about making Europe a dividing line with the Tories. There’s little doubt that Clegg, a former MEP is an ideological pro-European. But if he starts banging on about Europe he’ll cause his party problems.
The Lib Dems have several seats in the South West, one of the most Euro-sceptic regions of the county. As the European elections results there showed, when Europe is the issue the Lib Dems do badly. If Clegg really does intend to make Europe a key campaign dividing line, then the Tories will fancy their chance of picking up a fair few of these South Western marginals.
The odd thing about this conference is that the Lib Dem leadership keeps making policy changes which are, obviously, going to alienate important constituencies for them. They’ve downgraded their pledge on tuition fees which is going to hurt their student support, they’ve talked about ‘savage’ cuts which won’t endear them to the public sector professionals they were trying to woo, their new property tax is going to hurt them in the prosperous southern seats they are trying to protect from the Tories and now they want to emphasise Europe despite being a pro-European party which has a slew of seats in a heavily Euro-sceptic region. Calamity Clegg indeed.

Perhaps we should all turn up on the last night and drop Nick Clegg into an enormous trifle (whipped up by Rhoda Klapp). That would provide a suitable finale to the proceedings.
They should have stuck with Ming. At least he has a mature head on his shoulders.

If Clegg can succeed in reminding the electorate what the conservative party is like on Europe he stands to gain enormously. If anti-europeanism is so popular, why is Cameron so desperate to keep quiet about it?

I don't think it strange one bit that both Labour & the Liberals with their VERY unpopular lefty views have become as popular as the plauge.
The best bit though is that, in no way can they change their lefty ways to win people over, how the Tories must be laughing.

It isn't. Being the position of the Spectator, Telegraph or Mail does not make something the policy of the Conservative Party.

September 23rd, 2009 2:48pm Report this commentThe Lib Dem leadership is putting too much stock into Vince Cable's economic credentials... if they lose him at the next election (as they well might) they will surely implode. The positions are not just at odds with their core constituency but also the party at large. In some senses it would be electorally better to have a completely unworkable fantasy land economic policy than attempt to credibly justify any of it - as Cable tried and failed this week with the mansion tax. In fact I can forsee them retreating to fantasy land when Cable's halo finally falls off completely.

UKIP is rightly opposed. The Tories are tentatively talking about a Referendum on the Lisbon Treaty; they need to show greater commitment to opposing UK continued membership, in line with British public opinion.Where is the Tory opposition to Turkey's membership?

You're wrong about Hague's election disaster. He was going to lose even if he appeared as God since God was already here in the guise of Blair.
But your second point is of merit. I think Cameron regards Europe as secondary.
I will not vote for him if he does not commit to a referendum but I wonder if people regard British independence and democracy as important.
