Any questions for Cameron?
Fraser Nelson 1:23pm
I'm interviewing David Cameron tomorrow, for the next edition of the magazine. When Boris was a mere journalist, he said that writing interviews was like trying to make a mosaic out of a truckload of gravel - you ask questions, some trigger interesting responses, others not so much. So the writer sits with a heap of quotes, then puts together a narrative using about a fifth of the material.
The many joys of the internet mean I can publish far more online - gravel and all. I have an hour with him. So after I have asked him my list of questions, I'll gladly put some of yours to him. Fire away.

September 27th, 2009 2:16pm Report this commentI should like reassurance that there is some serious, behind-the-scenes analysis taking place that will make a post-Election, emergency budget fit for purpose.
In other words, we can all understand why the Conservative Party (or any political party) would not wish to say too much now about the measures it intends to take to dig the country out of Brown's near-bottomless economic pit.
However, some of us remain of the view that the Tory leadership has yet to grasp fully the true horror of what could lie ahead - economically and socially - if they're not indeed prepared to adopt pretty draconian measures after taking office.
Not sure how this observation converts to a question, but as a smart journalist, I'm sure you'll think of something.
Have a good interview.

September 27th, 2009 6:03pm Report this commentI think the real weak point in Cameron's stance is on global warming.
I believe there is no such thing as man made global warming and its a self serving scam by the UN and its associated scientific establishment.
Energy conservation and construction of nuclear power is fine. But hanging this on global warming betrays weak thinking.
Wind power is an expensive waste of time.
On top of all this - there is NO global warming. temps are the same as 20+ years ago and ice loss is totally in line with seasonal averages. Indeed ice is thickening not decreasing in many places.
SKY tried to run a scare story about retreating glaciers in the Himalayas but (I like to think) after I pointed them to reports by Indian scientists saying it was down to local conditions it mysteriously disappeared from the news schedule.
So
1 - Before spending (wasting) billions and billions will he give us an independent and open and transparent analysis and report on the IPCC operation?
2 - Will he accept that some of the science - like Manns hockey stick and the scare stories about Arctic ice and sea levels - are just political/ propaganda scares?

September 27th, 2009 6:25pm Report this commentTwo questions Fraser:
1. In view of Williams Hagues comment in Saturday's Daily Telegraph, on the Lisbon Treaty, is that "We think it is bad for Britain in the long term and we want to give the British people their say.", if the Conservative Party consider it bad for Britain in the long term and that they want to give the British people their say, what difference does it make whether the treaty is ratified or not?
2. William Hague states that he still believes in being "In Europe, but not ruled by Europe" and that that is still his belief. In which case that can only mean withdrawal and negotiation for a trading agreement such as has Norway. As this is not Conservative Party policy how does Mr. Cameron justify keeping William Hague on his front bench?

September 27th, 2009 11:21pm Report this commentIn a recent Daily Telegraph poll 70% of respondents said they want the Conservatives, should you win the election, to hold a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty. Even if it has been ratified by all other countries. Will you give the majority of the electorate what they want? Also on the Europe issue, in every poll ever conducted a majority of people are Eurosceptic yet the Tories do not tap into this and exploit the Labour and Lib Dem pro-Europeanism, why?

September 27th, 2009 11:47pm Report this commentLabour are seriously considering voting reform which will make it very difficult if not impossible for the Conservative party to form a government again. Given that Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have devolution and England votes conservative in the majority, shouldn't the Tory party go nuclear and call for an English Parliament? If Labour try to bring in a system to benefit them.

September 27th, 2009 11:55pm Report this commentDo you think it is the right strategy to put so much emphasis on cuts to the exclusion of everything else? This country has got many many problems that need addressing not just the economy. People need, yes, to understand the grave situation we are in financially, but we also need something positive to vote for. When Obama won the US elections he did so by giving people hope of change.

Do you agree this is unfair and would you hold a referendum on an English Parliament NOT Regional devolution? Surely it is about time the Conservatives stood up for the people of England more, given that if you win the next general election it will be largely thanks to the voters of England.

September 28th, 2009 12:20am Report this commentFraser, my question is not the kind of question Cameron would probably get asked on the doorsteps but I think it's a very important issue. I hope you get an answer for me. Here it is:
What is your view on the country's current libel laws? If you win the next election would you reform the draconian libel laws that have made Britain a magnet for Libel tourism? Do you find it shameful that our once Great country is now stifling free speech not just here but around the world? Our closest ally on earth (America) has a bill going through its Congress that will stop recognising the libel judgements of British courts. Also Judge Eady is a threat to free speech and the newspaper industry in this country with his peverse judgements in lible cases, what areyou going to doabout this issue?

September 28th, 2009 12:43am Report this commentThree questions:
1. I am tempted to vote Lib Dem due to Clegg promising they would push to cut the number of MP's by 150 and scrap the HoL and replace it with an elected Upper House. I know you say you will cut the number of MP's but I feel you have not gone far enough and what is your position on the House of Lords? Is it not time to be radical, no half measures?
2. Our broadcast media is the most heavily regulated in the western world. If every other part of life can be deregulated ie markets, energy, newspapers, airlines etc, why can't we have lighter regulation in broadcasting? This would bring about more choice for viewers.
3. You are always talking about localism and giving power to people. What is your position on referendums/ballot initiatives? Do you not agree that on major issues like assisted suicide, abortion, legalising drugs, europe etc national referendums should be held. At the moment on major issues politicians often say 'we want a debate about X Y Z' but in truth that means the politicians stating their views, the media/commentators/so called experts talking back to them, but there is no mechanism for the views of the people to be heard or reflected. On major issues and on rare occasions would it not be right to have debates where all views are heard but the people actually get to have the final say? I also think debating major issues would stop the media focusing non stop on tedious matters, who is up who is down and personalities.

September 28th, 2009 7:28am Report this commentWhy do the Tories allow Labour to get away with saying they are now the underdogs when the electoral bias means that you will need a lead of around 8-10% just to get a majority of 1? Labour are trying to make people think you are arrogant and taking victory for granted and a lot of people do not know about the electoral system, don't you need to get this message accross to the voters? Remember what Alistair Campbell used to say, 'the voters only start getting it when politicians are sicking of saying it and journalists are tired of hearing it'.

September 28th, 2009 12:33pm Report this commentProbably too late, but I'd be interested to know what Mr Cameron thinks are the pros and cons of means testing for some benefits. For example, my father feels a bit of a fraud when gets his winter fuel allowance, free transport etc, because he's lucky enough to be able to live comfortably without that assistance. Similarly, many better-off families do not need child benefit help. Given the huge crater of debt created by the current government, there will have to be significant cuts - perhaps this might be one way to grade them so the most disadvantaged people are less severely penalised.

September 29th, 2009 2:11pm Report this commentJack R - Agreed.
The young women in Britain are wearing this in-yer-face sign of their religion as a way of giving the finger to their host country. Covering one's face in public should be illegal - in fact, I think it is, but the law is ignored in the cause of placating some desert tribal people. I'm sure I remember from when I was a little girl, hearing that covering one's face "on the public highway" is illegal. I remember the phrase because I thought of Dick Turpin and thought the law was rather thrilling.
As I've mentioned before - and so have others - Mohammad had enough to think about with all his wives and he never got into fashion consultation. In fact, given that he was so busy prescribing everything else, he had surprisingly little to say about dress, except that "women should dress modestly", which, given the state of British town centres on Saturday nights, is actually sound advice. He also said that men should dress modestly.
Burqas and all that paraphenalia that looks so sinister, not to say comical, on European streets, is just ancient desert nomad attire to keep the ever-blowing sands of the Sahara out of noses, mouths, eyes and ears. It long, long predates Islam.

September 29th, 2009 2:18pm Report this commentTo all those who questioned Cameron about the EUSSR, note that any answers he gives will be notable for their evasion. Cameron, like his hero Blair, sees his own personal future as a figure of power and influence in Europe. As with Blair, the ancient country of Britain is but a stepping stone to real, unelected power.
