Parliamentarian of the Year
10:47amThe Spectator/Threadneedle Parliamentarian of the Year Awards are fast approaching. As we did last year, we are inviting you to nominate a reader’s representative. This should be the elected official who you believe has best pursued the noble art of politics, putting the public interest ahead of everything else, especially expenses. All you have to do is click here and – in no more than 250 words – nominate your choice.
We’ll print a selection of the best nominations in the magazine throughout October. Then, on the 28th October, the reader who has submitted the best-written nomination will be revealed. The closing date for entries is Monday 26th October 2009. Good luck.

September 30th, 2009 11:06am Report this commentIan Duncan-Smith. No contest.
In my view, he is the kind of politician who I can look to and say, honestly, what he's doing is truly inspiring.
I wasn't a big fan when he was leader of the Tory party, but I always thought he was a decent bloke. Latterly, he's proved beyond all shadow of a doubt that he is a man of integrity, vision and courage.
I've never met him, by the way...

The cleaners. They know what real dirt is.

September 30th, 2009 11:32am Report this commentI would like to nominate John Bercow. Not only is he tall and very handsome, he has been a terrific Speaker, commanding respect and affection in equal measure from all sides. His personal political journey is a shining example to any young person contemplating a career lining their pockets with taxpayers' money.

September 30th, 2009 11:46am Report this commentDoes it have to be an elected official? I would like to nominate the mole who leaked the expenses documents to the Daily Telegraph. If that's not possible, I nominate Marta Andreasen for her work in exposing corruption in the EU
Charles Flaccidwidger
September 30th, 2009 11:47am Report this commentI'd like to nominate Michael Martin for his devotion to transparency in the matter of MPs' expenses.

September 30th, 2009 11:49am Report this commentWithout a doubt, Frank Field. A man of principle and who is not afraid of telling his party the truth.

September 30th, 2009 11:50am Report this commentGordon Brown, he saved the world, is honest as the day is long and somehow got me a free sky subscription.
(I've never met him BTW, well not often).
Saint Teresa.
September 30th, 2009 11:52am Report this commentVincent Cable. A true saint, a visionary, speaks well of everyone and lives a pure and simple life.
Loved by all and blessed with a voice of golden honey.

September 30th, 2009 12:04pm Report this commentPerhaps it would be most appropriate to make the award this year.

September 30th, 2009 12:28pm Report this commentThe Parliamentarian of any year is without question Winston Churchill; his spirit still pervades the rotting Westminster gasworks and none of its current incumbents deserves the nomenclature. They should all hang their heads in shame after the disgraceful exposures of the last 6 months and certainly not be awarded any tin medals by journos who wish to leech on their temporary power or influence. Shame on you all (I not this post is unattributed - perhaps not surprising).

September 30th, 2009 12:48pm Report this commentSir Graphus - I presume there should be a "not" somewhere in that sentence??

September 30th, 2009 1:14pm Report this commentThere is a definite welling-up of excitement on this blog, undoubtedly because the serfdom of the last 12 years is coming to an end.
So my vote goes to the guy who has most persistently got under the skin of the Prime Mentalist, and who's policies and tactics seem to now be gaining the recognition they always deserved - George Osborne.

September 30th, 2009 1:45pm Report this commentYou're absolutely right, Hysteria, and I grovel in apology for my English, once again.

September 30th, 2009 4:06pm Report this commentIt is a pity that few contributors to these pages indulge in serious debate.
The answer to the question has to be a run-off between Frank Field and Iain Duncan Smith. Frank field continues as a shining example of probity and honesty whilst IDS has contributed more to our knowledge and understanding of the social problems afflicting us than most of the government's paymasters ever have. Both Field and IDS conduct their business without political point scoring but with real interest of the citizen at heart.
They should split the award between them.

September 30th, 2009 4:40pm Report this commentAre you accepting nominations through this post? I have tried making a nomination on the Parliamentarian of the Year site but can't work out how to submit it.
BTW - Daniel Hannan: no contest.

September 30th, 2009 4:42pm Report this commentI agree with the expenses mole suggestion. The look on the MP's faces when the mole collects the award and gives the speech.
