Speaker Bercow asserts himself
David Blackburn 5:25pm
Despite the circumstances of his election, Speaker Bercow is showing scant regard for the party who secured his election. First, he recommended that ministers who sat in the House of Lords, particularly the Lord Most High, should be cross-examined by MPs, and today he gave Battlin’ Bob a severe dressing down in the Commons.
The very damning Gray report was debated today, and Ainsworth can hardly have been anticipating this event with generous thoughts and easy gaiety. To avoid total disaster, the cunning Defence Secretary played the ‘George Carmen card’ – that is, release the evidence an hour before the debate so that none of the participants have the time to read it. But this Speaker stands firm against the executive's skullduggery. Emulating a Victorian patriarch, Bercow took to his feet, looked down his nose and described former shop steward Ainsworth’s ruse as “rank discourtesy” - Bercow's closer to Lord Derby than he is a Labour stooge. He said:
‘I must say to him (the Secretary of State) that publication a matter of an hour before the debate is regarded by Members as a discourtesy, and I confess that I myself also regard it as a discourtesy, and I hope that this will not happen again.’
The reign of Speaker Bercow is in its infancy, but other than yesterday’s pusillanimity over the Trafigura gagging order he has kept order and defended privilege far more effectively than his predecessor. Bercow was the wrong man for the job, but he should now be allowed to perform it.

October 15th, 2009 7:57pm Report this commentAll well and good but far too late, the man is no more competent than his predecessor and should be replaced on a free vote after the next General Election.
A Dwarf 'wanting the job' is no more qualified and likely far less so, than someone "prepared to serve", with or without the luxury accommodation that goes along with the job.
Get rid of the fool, anyone in his position and given the "electoral cycle", who didn't keep a grip on Legg is an obvious failure and needs to be removed from Office asap. Nothing else to discuss.

October 15th, 2009 9:00pm Report this commentI can't help but feel that this is a feeble response by someone who wants to be on the record as saying 'Something'.
It was made clear that since July the report had changed very little and so obviously it was kept from those who needed to see and study it. This shows not only a problem with Ainesworth but with the Speaker. If he is unable to wield the authority he has been given, then perhaps he should step down and allow someone who can.

October 15th, 2009 10:53pm Report this commentThe little trouser leg should have put his money where his mouth is and postponed the debate until MPs' had the chance to read the documentation. Alternatively he could have disciplined Ainsworth for his dishonourable behaviour by explusion. It would have given the appalling man the opportunity for a moustache and pudding basin makeover.

October 16th, 2009 12:42am Report this commentI for one am very happy to see Mr Bergnome assert himself. Its about time he stamped his little feet and lets face it Bob Ainsworth (and his army) are no real threat to anyone.
I am inspired by the Speaker and have decided to emulate his assertiveness and - like him - get myself noticed. Consequently, on my way to work this morning I farted on the Underground.

October 16th, 2009 5:36am Report this commentI am always pleased to see the loony fringes of our party driping with foam from the mouths and attacking someone with such venom.
It means John's doing things right. Truth is, people hate him because he's a Jew, he went from being a right-wing nut to being in the moderate middle or left of the party, and because there are still a lot of toffs that don't like people not from 'their class' becoming anything but the backroom teasmade.
They hated Thatcher because of it, looked down their nose at Major, and it goes on and on.
I wish people would put this to rest. He is the Speaker - g-d damn enough ALREADY!

October 16th, 2009 6:25am Report this commentI quite agree. It's high time for Conservatives to stop baiting Bercow. He was fairly elected by the House of Commons. If the Conservatives wanted to choose the Speaker, they should not have thrown out the old one. They should have waited until they had a majority.

October 16th, 2009 8:29am Report this commentIf Bercom had tried to do something like: Step onto the next business and delayed the debate giving time to adsorb a 300 page document. This would have been a real admonishment. Only 1 hour before there had been complaints about Brown giving out the, selling of assets story before going to Parliament. Labour keeps affronting Parliament and there is no effective Speaker to take them to task.

'Our party'? How do you know?
But what is really dangerous is this attitude of 'we are where we are, so move on'. That is simply aiding and abetting.

October 16th, 2009 9:46am Report this commentWe shall see the proof of the pudding of Speaker Bercow's mettle when Sir Thomas Legg expands his remit to include flipping, possible tax evasion, and apparent profiteering using the bank of taxpayers funds..
If we are ever to trust MPs we will need to see all of the breaches of the spirit of the rules dealt with and a healthy respect of taxpayers instated.
A tall order, I know, but it's the only way for Gordon Brown's knee jerk reaction of appointing Sir Thomas to give the impression of his having done something decisive and investigate all current and recent previous incumbents - whether they wish to stand again or not.
And, as repaying may indeed cause some of them hardship there should be negotiations as to payment over a period, so as to be reasonable.
After that the fees office should be cleansed because they were involved.
All of this should come under the remit of Speaker Bercow - and be an ultimate test of his judgement, both political and personal.
