Power failure

Fraser Nelson 6:18pm

When I was at The Scotsman we dreamed about getting the kind of scoop the newspaper has this morning – one that impacts the American presidential race and runs on Drudge all day. It’s by Gerri Peev, political correspondent, who has an eerie knack of drawing candour from people (just ask Tory MP James Gray). Samantha Power (pictured), Barack Obama’s foreign policy adviser, has told Gerri she regards Hillary as a “monster” who is “stooping to anything”. Power has now resigned. This is what McCain can dream about: internecine warfare amongst Democrats. And there may be months to go.

Read the quote - "She is a monster, too – that is off the record – she is stooping to anything." So basically - sod ethics - the Scotsman has ruined this woman's career by publishing a careless remark she instantly said was not for publication. That's not how you do it. No-one with any sense will ever talk to the writer of this piece ever again.

Chris, the interview was on the record and there was no agreement to make it off the record. What Powers said is the equiavlent of saying "please don't print that". No UK politcian would try that. If they misspeak while the tape is whirring, then it's on the record unless they agree after.

I'm glad she's gone. I resented her comments about how Obama would restore good sentiment for the US in Britain. We're fighting two wars side by side, there's no restoring needed. How nice this happened only one day later.

Anybody remember this? -

"You cannot hope to bribe or twist,
thank God! the British journalist.

But, seeing what the man will do
unbribed, there's no occasion to."

I was amazed to hear that Mr Obama was *getting* any foreign policy advice. If she was behind 'let's invade Pakistan' and 'let's hold a multi-cultural dialogue with Iran to see how much we can give away to Hizbollah', perhaps it's good for Mr Obama that she's gone.
