Has the tide turned against ‘President’ Blair?
David Blackburn 5:34pm
Increasingly, it looks as though Tony Blair must make do with what he’s got. Last Saturday, the Independent reported that Nicolas Sarkozy is likely to evoke the spirit of de Gaulle with an emphatic ‘Non’, founded on Britain's retention of the Pound.Today, Iain Martin has heard that Jonathan Powell’s proselytising in Brussels merely antagonised his audience. And the kiss of death for Blair probably came in the form of an endorsement from Silvio Berlusconi.
But, there must be a European President, and, as Matthew D’Ancona observes, Blair’s experience on the international stage, his Europhilia and his Eurotrash-popstar status make him the ideal candidate. Nothing is more galvanising than the prospect of thwarted ambition; for that and his innate good fortune, don’t count Blair out.
PS. Danny Finkelstein has an excellent analysis about the internal EU debate of the relative merits and demerits of a strong EU Presidency. The feeling is, and I second this, that Blair wants the role to be more than an administrative bauble; but little is known about the ins and outs of this vital debate: the government and opposition should join in.

October 22nd, 2009 6:03pm Report this commentBlair would put himself up for hire as a Trojan horse to the highest bidder. The people who benefited the most from his Premiership of the UK were Russian oligarchs, Israeli property developers, Asian steel magnates, thieving bankers and US warmongers. The people who paid the highest price and got the worst deal were the British. The odds are loaded against Europeans ever deriving any benefit from a "President" Blair.

It would be hideously awful for a man whom the population has rejected to gain for himself any further political position, especially one which might give him any influence over the UK.

October 22nd, 2009 6:34pm Report this commentIf there is any justice let's hope it has! How can half the heads of the EU governments possibly want the deceitful, duplicitous, egregious, hypocritical Blair to be their president? I use that word advisedly because her certainly would not be ours.
Europe stinks - let's get out for good.

October 22nd, 2009 6:48pm Report this commentWhy would the EU want to choose someone from the most Eurosceptic country on the continent is puzzling. It surely must occur to even some of the most ardent Euro-nutters that appointing a man to a position created by a treaty from a country whose people were cheated out of having a say on it could be seen as a tad inflammatory.
On the plus side Mr Tony could get back a little of our rebate that he so generously gave away in salary, expenses etc..... so it's not all bad.

Percy - the European Government will think that having a President Blair will be like rubbing our faces in their crap. They don't care about sensitivity when it comes to showing us our bosses are.

October 22nd, 2009 8:36pm Report this commentCan I refer you to an article in the English language version of Der Spiegel? [Google Der Spiegel International or Spiegel Online International/Europe then scroll down the list of articles to one titled "In the running to be Europe's Top Politican"]. The date is given in the American way - 10/19/09. All is obviously not rosy. However, the interesting points are that it down plays Blair's chances but tips Millipede major as the High Representative. No. I'm not making it up! I didn't know whether to laugh or throw my hands up in horror.
Perhaps we are worrying too much about Lisbon. It will all go belly up sooner or later.

October 22nd, 2009 8:39pm Report this commentI suppose if you want a man who reneged on his promise of an EU referendum, who said education, education, education and then introduced university fees, who lied about the reason to invade Iraq, let Brown run amok and ruin the UK economy, allowed un-controlled immigration, then yes he is the man for you. He is a hypocrite who goes to see the bones of some obscure Saint, but cannot go to Wotton Bassett to pay respect to our fallen brave troops returning from Afghanistan - nor can our Prime Minister or Bob Ainsworth come to that!!. Let hope someone with lots of integrity such as Mary Robinson be considered an eminently suitable candidate for the first President of the EU.

Not sure. I have a good many German friends ranging from a very precise Northerner to a jolly Swabian and a typical Barvarian. The Swabian has more of a sense of humour than the other two. However, none of them is stupid.
On the other hand, the Germans as a nation come at the EU from a somewhat different perspective than we do. And they view the political class in a someway different way from what we do. And it is that political class that is the danger.
