Heseltine rules out serving in a Cameron government
James Forsyth 3:15pm
There has been speculation in the press recently that Michael Heseltine might be offered a Cabinet post after the next election. But in an interview for the BBC’s Straight Talk with Andrew Neil, Hesletine is fairly Shermanesque in his denials:
The construction of his first Cabinet will be a tricky task for Cameron. The shadow Cabinet is currently 34 when the Cabinet should only be 24 and the right of the party feels that the left of the party is currently over-represented in the shadow Cabinet with Ken Clarke, Andrew Lansley and Sir George Young all in it.“I would be 77, and frankly David Cameron does not need 77 year olds in his Government. We do not have the physical stamina to sit up all night reading those interminable papers, arriving for breakfast meetings or whatever it may be, 6 days a week, or 5 and a half days a week, so it’s better to, you know - any advice we can give is free and available and welcome to it but you mustn’t think in terms of recruiting people like me.”

October 31st, 2009 3:35pm Report this commentI'm glad you mention Ken Clark here. I've just had the misfortune to be a passenger in a car with BBC R4 Any Questions on the radio. Clarke is useless, well past his sell by date. It tells you a lot about Cameron that he thought otherwise and gave him a job.

October 31st, 2009 4:14pm Report this commentThank the Lord; there are enough soft Europhile lefties on his team already.
We need more from the right wing; this country has suffered 12years of socialism under labour, we have had enough.
It is high time Cameron took note of public opinion.

This would be public opinion that has soundly rejected a more right wing Tory party twice at the polls, and showed little inclination to move en masse prior to the shift to the centre under Cameron? That public opinion?

October 31st, 2009 8:22pm Report this commentYou don't mean public opinion. You mean what you think. We on these blogs are WELL to the right of public opinion. For instance I'd close down the Beeb and I expect you would too, but this is very much a minority opinion. I'd leave the EU, but most peple want to stay in. I could go on. Kenneth Clarke is diverting, intelligent and amusing, which is a damn sight more than can be said for some. Really, I do think some of you LIKE being the nasty party. And you are so certain you are right you remind me of the bastards on the other side.

The Conservatives lost because of sleaze smears, and general boredom with the government: policy had little to do with it, something that those too close to the 'action' never really realised.

October 31st, 2009 11:12pm Report this commentWith effect from 23:00 GMT October 31st, there are now 26 vacant posts on the European Commission.
Jose Manuel Barroso was recently re-appointed as President according to the correct procedures laid down in the treaties, but the five year terms of the 26 other persons who were previously Commissioners have now expired.
The claim that their terms have been extended is a mere pretence, there being no treaty provision which permits the term of a Commissioner to be extended.
If they now impersonate European Commissioners and continue to draw salaries and expenses and purport to carry out the functions of a Commissioner, then they will be putting themselves at personal risk of both criminal and civil prosecution, and their actions and decisions will be legally null and void.

November 1st, 2009 2:57am Report this commentThe British people are fed up with slimy politicians who are only in politics for their own end. Heseltine's political career ended when he stabbed Thatcher in the back and opened up the UK for Phoney Tony and the current Labour excuse for a government.
Heseltine is simply unacceptable to the British/English people. Yesterday's man. Can not be trusted. Good riddance.

November 1st, 2009 8:30am Report this commentAt least Heseltine appreciates his limitations. Why on earth anyone should think that he had anything to contribute to a new Tory cabinet in 2010, I cannot imagine.
I enjoyed Fergus Pickering earlier - he has got it just about right. And Ken Clarke, much as I disagree with him on Europe, is a human being unlike so many political automatons in our midst.

November 2nd, 2009 12:05am Report this commentHeseltine is sensible to get his say in first, because I don't think he was going to figure as a real player if the game is on. The day his ego got out of the bag he was done for.
Fergus Pickering, love your bit. Not really sure if we are all 'well to the right', I see us as interested in what is going on and if that is how you view us, I would rather that than not know what the hell is going on. The beeb is so far over to the left and dumbed down and in Liebours pocket that I would hate to rely on it for anything of consequence... so would we miss it?
Europe, what does it do for us? If you listen to Brown we get 3million jobs out of it..... His figures never add up, that is why we are broke.
Who is the nasty party? Liebour have stripped people of aspiration over the past 12yrs. by removing any reason for 7+million people to engage in the real economy. Now that is really nasty.
K Clarke is good value, bright, and knows his way round. Cameron couldn't leave him out, safer in than out. Europe is the big diffenence in philosophy here and not sure if he can see another view. He also needs some new shoes! he has a long road to travel in 2010.
