It's Worse Than That

Firstly, the planned 2p rise in Fuel Duty in April should be scrapped, which would be a politically astute move.

It's worse than that, much, much worse. I'm preparing a much longer piece on this which I'll offer later, but try this for size.

If we all agree about climate change, if we agree that the polluter should pay, that we need to tax petrol properly to make this so and finally, if we believe that the Stern Review was correct about the costs of carbon emissions (all of these being part of the received wisdom at present) then we should cut the duty on petrol by 13 pence per litre.

For the fuel duty has risen by 24 pence over the past 15 years when it should only have risen by 11.
