Seeing Darling wearing a purple tie and Yvette Cooper a purple suit, one wonders whether some spin doctor has decided that purple best represents stability in a time of global uncertainty. The Prime Minister, however, is sporting a red tie.

James - you are spot on. In psychiatry, purple is used to treat patients who suffer from fears and obsessions because of its calming effects. According to psychologists, purple contributes to mental equilibrium. People who wear purple are described as "very sensitive and charitable".
