The SNP flees for the hills

David Blackburn 1:05pm

Last week, I argued that the Glasgow North East by-election would force the SNP to alter its tactics. The Scottish press are reporting that Salmond will scrap his plans for a straight referendum on independence in favour of a multi-option poll on what further powers Holyrood should assume, short of independence. Such a withdrawal was being mooted before the election but has been accelerated by the scale of the SNP’s defeat and its disintegrating confidence.

This concession is seen as the only way the SNP minority government can maintain the co-operation of opposition parties on the issue. Only, according to the Daily Record, they won’t play ball. Opposition parties are on to a winner: the SNP remain fixated with hypothetical referenda, rather than the reality of the recession. Labour’s victory as ‘insurgents’ was predicated on such terms. Arguing that Scotland’s economic and social problems have not been addressed by the SNP, and therefore that the financial benefits of union are a prerequisite to immediate recovery, is an unanswerable paradigm.

Salmond is in the opening phases of a rearguard he should never have had to fight. Scotland’s entrenched social problems are Labour’s legacy rather than the adjunct of SNP incompetence. The party’s struggles owe everything to Salmond’s tactical naivety in pushing independence in a recession and choosing to present himself predominantly as a ruler. He has become the focal point for criticism, not the Scottish Labour party. This governing lark's harder than it looks.

The SNP was to much like the Labour party so the people of Glasgow at that local election said to themselves "better the devil you know", the SNP have proven themselves to be another political party all for dictatorship and deaf to the concerns of the people.

The SNP are exactly where they want to be:

In power, with lots of lovely English money, with no intention whatsoever of mucking things up by doing something difficult like running a country.

They are loving it. Power without responsibility. Money without effort.

The Jocks have brought it on themselves. When they swapped their admirably rugged 19th century spirit of invention and entrepeneurship for voting Liebour, sucking on the Welfare tit, scoffing fried Mars bars and whingeing into their whisky abt the wicked English their future was clear.
Now with nae oil, nae coal, nae bawbees, busted banks and naeone to blame but themselves they're shafted. Even if they don't want independence, the English should insist on it and show them the door. They have been lording it over us for twelve long years. Gang awa with the lot of yees.

If this is true - Salmond has completely screwed up. The one tactical position he had was to request a referendum knowing that the Union parties would block it. He would therefore look like the plucky outsider being denied a right to fulfil his electoral mandate by the old establishment.

The clever move for the parties of the Union would be to allow the referendum and hope it would be rejected. An unlikely move and therefore a win by default for Salmond.

By backing down in this way you have to question the point of the SNP. If Salmond is only after power - there are 3 establishment parties for the electorate to choose from.

Looks like the end for the SNP and the Scottish independence movement.

Ask yourself this, why is the liebour party and liberals sooo frightened of an independence referendum ? why are they so scared of the democratic will of the people ? Well its obvious, isnt it, they may not like the answer, the liebour party needs the Scottish liebour block vote to win at Westminster, without it , liebour is sunk.

Liebour and the liberals will squeel ''we cant have a referendum because of the recession.'' This is a neat little trick, its an excuse, they didnt want a referendum when the economy was good.

Its like the Lisbon Treaty referendum, the Lib Lab Con parties
will never have a referendum. Too scared of the result.

'' Independence, the freedom of a self governing nation, is in my estimation the highest political good, for which any disadvantage, if need be, and any sacrifice are a cheap price.''

The theory is good but the practice is flawed. Salmond blags on about a referendum because that's what he is expected to do but in truth he doesn't want it because he knows it would be a "no" vote and that would be the end of the SNP for ever.

Once faced with the reality of going it alone the majority of Scots, including a minority of SNP voters, would stay with the devolution they have, backed up by wads of cash from Westminster.

Peter

Once you establish a parliament in Edinburgh, that government will want more and more powers, leading to the inevitable, independence, that is an unalterable fact.

It wont happen overnight, everything is incremental and subtle, its a process. America, India and Irish independence didnt happen all of a sudden, it took 50 years just like the Common market has turned into the EUSSR, thats
taken 40 years.

No one believed there would be a Scots parliament after 300
years, it happened. No one believed that there would be a SNP government, it happened. No one believed that the SNP could beat liebour and Alex Salmond would be leader of Scotland, it happened.

To finish off I will leave you with a quote from the very prophetic Enoch Powell who coined the West Lothian question .( it wasnt Tam Dalyell )

'' By voting liebour in the 1997 election , you have voted for the break up of the United Kingdom.''

Wilhelm - Indeed he did - to his wife I believe after the election.

Well, we shall see. We, thankfully, retain a vestige of democracy here and votes will have to take place. Whether or not, in time, we will live to see independent governments in Scotland, Wales and Ulster remains to be seen.

Dont just think postal fraud and rigging elections only happens in Africa, it happens here, but the media doesnt report it.

As Stalin said

'' Those who cast the votes decide nothing.
Those who count the votes decide everything.''

I wouldnt trust the liebour party an inch.

I suppose Peter that you thought Westminster politicians dont fiddle their expenses, it was those foreign politicians that did that kinda thing ?

Did you not hear about the postal fraud in Birmingham ? and Glenrothes, when 5000 postal votes turned up for liebour, the liberals wanted an investigation but the voter register spookily vanished.

According to the Guardian 1000 postal votes turned up 3 days before the Glasgow by election, strange isnt it ?

We need to be independent. The English trolls keep putting us down.
London, and the south east has stolen the wealth from the rest of the UK for centuries and taken all the decisions with the civil service centered in London every decision is taken in the south east's interest then we get a few from outside that region in some token power positions an we are expected to believe we run you lot. Give me a break. We need to be free from these greedy types.
We are the only people who realize we have been shafted for too long by southern England. Goodbye.
Eventually the rest of the UK will realise what a greedy power crazed lot the south east is.
Goodbye.
When we go The North will turn on the South, as they will not have english patriotism to keep them happy with being shafted.

The sole reason the SNP have achieved electoral success is because they occupied the vacuum New Labour created when it lurched to the centre. It is an absurdly tiny minority of Scots who want independence, and those who do seem to be concerned more over alienation from the English political dynamic than any positive self-determinative streak.

The SNP will inevitably deteriorate into a left-wing pro-scotland party with no ambitions or intentions to achieve independence.

How do you come to that conclusion Dirty Euro? Our Scottish Prime Minister doesn't come from the South East of England nor did Tony Blair and Jim Callaghan represented Cardiff South as an MP!
An independent England would cut off the flow of English taxpayers money to Scotland Wales and N.Ireland so that we can spend it on our own services!
