The bard of Whitehall

James Forsyth 2:23pm

Some cabinet ministers are not fully reconciled to the Brown era if a few lines of verse supposedly written by a cabinet minister that have been doing the rounds in recent days are anything to go by.

“At Downing Street upon the stair,

I met a man who wasn’t Blair,

He wasn’t Blair again today,

Oh how I wish he’d go away.”

At Downing Street upon the stair, I saw a space but no one there, Just emptiness and shallow tide, A hidden place for Men and Mice.

I didn't realise John Hutton had poetic aspirations, assuming it's him. He struck me as being more down to earth, as in "Gordon Brown would make a f*ck*ng awful Prime Minister", a loose tongued but clear-headed prophecy which has come back to haunt him.
