The lessons of New York's falling murder rate
James Forsyth 6:36pm
New York’s ever falling murder rate is one of the wonders of modern urban policy. It is proof that decisive political leadership can arrest and then reverse decline that many had considered inevitable.
This year, as The New York Times reports, New York is scheduled to record the lowest number of murders since records began in 1962. In 1990 there were 2,245 murders in 2009, to date, there have been 461.
Now, it has often been rightly said that Britain should learn from the success of broken windows policing. But reading the piece in the Times today, I was struck by the fact that the murder rate is still falling despite the NYPD having to reduce its number of officers by 6,000 since 2001. Much of this success is due to the NYPD using technology to help best deploy its resources.
The NYPD's work is a consummate example of how public services can do more for less and one that Britain’s political parties would be well advised to learn from.

December 28th, 2009 7:07pm Report this commentThe differences are that New York, USA is not governed by politically correct morons like the UK is. I don't just mean politicians but the police 'service' (think Ian Blair), CPS, IPCC, the human rights brigade headed by Trevor Philips and most of all the judiciary (which by the way is on the whole elected in the US). Also punishment is much tougher/harsher in the US than it is in the UK. Until the whole thing is reformed to mirror the states then we can't do what they do over there. It is as simple as that, there are too many vested interests, as I have listed above.

December 28th, 2009 7:48pm Report this commentTonight’s BBC television news stated that burglary for the first time in ten years was on the increase, (I doubt these statistics) we were informed that the police were now to target known burglars.
The police spokesman said we will now take the necessary measures that we would for a SERIOUS CRIME.
There you have it; in our country serious crime is:-
Dropping litter, parking a car, smoking a cigarette, giving a Muslim a sideways glance, expressing ones faith (if that faith is Christianity), not agreeing that the joining together of two of the same sex is a marriage, photographing almost any public area, or even photographing your own grandchild, this list could go on and on.
But until know the dastardly crime of burglary; was not on that list, in the eyes of the law it was a minor crime.
The liberal elite have much; to be ashamed of, our world has been turned upside down, good honest standards of living have been bulldozed aside to make way for the politically correct monster, that is, equality and diversity.

December 28th, 2009 8:42pm Report this commentWouldn't it be wonderful to hear a Tory politician show real anger, yes ANGER, at the way our country has become a home for international terrorists and all the reasons put here by David Ossitt and Kirsty Richards. AND for that politician to assure the British people that a Tory Government will reject all the laws that have created this bloody disgrace!
Sadly, I doubt that David Cameron will change anything. We are now a fourth rate country, Thank you Blair and Brown and all the lefties in quango's everywhere!

The announcement about targetting burglary is in sharp contrast to the secrecy around setting up the special police squads who, at taxpayers expense, target "hate crime". Wonder why?

December 28th, 2009 11:29pm Report this commentIf the Metropolitan Police adopted similar tactics there would be an outcry from all the usual suspects.
Until we actually get the truth about knife and gun crime in this country, which is that a large percentage of it is committed by ethnic minorities, especially young black men of Afro Caribbean descent, nothing will change.
To begin, the Met has to be honest about this and publish the statistics, something it has hitherto been reluctant to do, for political reasons.
Next, our dear leaders must be open and honest and order the use of profiling, so that strategies like the ones mentioned in the NYT piece will work here. So then, fat chance of that, eh?
What we have is ordinary law abiding citizens being pestered by the police in order to fill quotas.

December 29th, 2009 8:54am Report this commentI know NYC does not inflict the death penalty, but here's a thought on the day that the Chinese have done so. Between 1950 and 1957 the murder rate in all Britain never rose above 180 a year. The DP was abolished in 1965, since when the murder rate has steadily increased. There are now over 900 a year. Lesser crimes have also increased exponentially TENFOLD. AS the Americans say: Go figure.

The local population is screaming out for the death penalty to be re-introduced (both blacks and whites alike) but the government refuses to respond. December 29th, 2009 11:05pm Report this commentThe key problem regarding crime is that First, socialists believe that crime it is the result of a dysfunctional society and when we achieve the socialist nirvana it will all disappear, hence all the PC crap, class envy, hate the market, etc. It has got worse over the last 50 years even though Labour has only been in power for part of that because the Tories have some of the PC hangups and so have not reversed fully the Labour measures. Even Thatcher created more comprehensives than Labour.

Fergus Pickering quite rightly corrected you; for your error in referring to the Blessed Margaret, by using her surname without a prefix.
It has long been the practice of the liberal left; labour MP’s, the BBC and those vile thoughtless cretins who pose as alternative comedians, to poke fun, derision and hate at this most accomplished lady.
Fergus asks that you consider the old amongst us; we who were brought up to show respect and courtesy to everyone but to be particularly courteous to women.
Lady Thatcher has; without making a song and dance out of it, secured for herself an honourable place in the history of our country, future generations will look back to her time in office with admiration.
Whilst the comedy dual act of Liar Blair and his crony the Coward Brown will long be remembered for their deceit and warmongering incompetence.

December 31st, 2009 11:50am Report this commentA quick google of comparative murder rates around the world shows that the US ranks 24th for murders per capita, the UK 46th - just what, exactly, can we learn from America about reducing murder then?
Martin Studowski
January 2nd, 2010 7:51pm Report this commentMike Doherty, what you can learn starts with why the US murder rate (along with virtually every other crime statistic) is falling in the US while rising in the UK and most other european countries, as well as Australia and canada. 15 years ago, the murder rate between the US and the UK was 15:1. Today it's 3:1. With that rate, within 15 years, the UK's murder rate per capital should be ahead of the US. Open your eyes "mate". Not all evil leads to the US contrary to what your british media tells you.
