Legg latest
Peter Hoskin 12:07pmThe Legg report is about 240 pages, if you can manage it. But the message you can take from it is short enough: there's going to be plenty more public anger with our political class. Guido's post here should tell you why. But, suffice to say, there are MPs paying back up to £42,458. There are dodgy claims for flagpole accoutrements, luxury furniture and expensive gardeners. And even the report itself cost more than the money than it's going to recoup.
Although I don't think the parties should be trying to make political capital out of each other's misdemeanours – beyond, of course, proposing ways to fix the mess – there's little doubting that this is especially bad news for Gordon Brown. Governing parties tend to bear the brunt of these things, of course. But throw in the allegations about the PM's slush fund yesterday, and his recent spin about reform may already be fatally undermined.
P.S. The files on Parliamentary room bookings – which promise to highlight all the grubby cross-pollination between MPs and "outside interests" – has also been released here.

February 4th, 2010 12:32pm Report this commentIt really is a shame that public executions were abolished.
52% of our politicians have been caught on the fiddle. The entire class is corrupt.
Iris Robinson charged us more than £1,000 for a NEW BED. This is beyond satire. As To quote the great Richard Littlejohn: You (really) couldn't make it up.
Where's Colonel Pride when you need him?
More to the point: where's our pride that we put up with this?

February 4th, 2010 1:18pm Report this commentThis is the threat to our democracy:
Phil Hope, MP - from his website:
Aged 53 (19/4/1955) and married to Allison Hope (53), Director for Employer Responsiveness at Tresham Institute, Corby, Two children, Nicholas who is a political researcher and Anna who is a political organiser.
So here we have an MP with his snout well and truly in the trough - to the extent that he has to repay over £42.5k.
What worries me more is the rest of the story. Partner: some weido ology job in Employer Responsiveness (what the **** is that supposed to be?); Child 1 is a 'political researcher' and Child 2 is a 'political organiser'.
Professional politicians! Kids born into the system, university to do some useless degree (politics, world affairs, etc)then straight into some political support job until the behind of their ears are sufficiently dry to present themselves at some constituency as a prospective parliamentary candidate. Never done a proper job - but ready to tell the rest of us how we should live in the real world because they learnt the 'way' under some lefty-leaning ology professor at uni!

February 4th, 2010 1:29pm Report this commentFair point about Iris, Vulture, but come on; there's no way a woman with her voracious appetite is going to settle for a 200 quid divan from Dreamworld, even on 12 months interest free credit.
Silly me watched BBC news and Newsnight last night, hoping to see what they made of the £50k fund.
Pas du tout!
I guess Crick is still poring over Betsygate, hoping to find something he missed first time.

February 4th, 2010 1:32pm Report this commentI have had enough of this expenses story.
Yaddy yaddy ya some mps took expenses because they were told they could.
I was angry at some of themn
I think the crooked ones whop filled the system should get done. But to say to someone here you can have a maintenance for yours house free of charge then two years later to say on you took maintenance free of charge did you well you deserve to be hanged.
That is just lunacy,
MPs get paid too much. Cut their pay. But do not be surprised that when you offered humans too much money and too much expenses that they took that pay and expenses.
Yawn Yawn Yawn. I have heard it all before.
MPS get paid too much. Enough said. But lets stop going on about it to an extent that real evil men in the BNP take power.
Now cut the pay, lets move on and talk about real issues.
We need to look at serious issues about tax redistribution not over some selfish issues.

February 4th, 2010 2:40pm Report this commentI was half listening to a phone-in on this subject, and it seems that a lot of people just want MPs who don't fiddle their expenses. What they stand for doesn't seem to come into it. I find this rather worrying.
The total in dodgy claims is the smallest drop compared to the tidal wave of national debt they've run up.
Greenslime: Your picture of Mr Hope's family is a delightful cliche, but how much is fact and how much speculation?
