Under fire

Fraser Nelson 2:06pm

After Hillary Clinton’s hilarious “mis-speak” – whereby she concocted a story about arriving in Bosnia under sniper fire – the betting markets have moved again towards Barack Obama, who is now the clear favourite to become president (Obama – evens; McCain – 6/4; Clinton – 7/2). No wonder she got on so well with Cherie Blair.

And in case Gordon Brown is thinking of using any McPorkies in the next election campaign, the below is a taste of what might await him:

Surely you're not suggesting the BBC would run a news article like that over McBrownies, are you, Fraser?

Tiberius, I mean the internet jumps on little lies in an unique way. In a trice, a YouTube compilation can be made and spread virally. And as with last the Australian election, this will be a factor in the next election.

Respectfully, anyone who thinks Obama will get past the Pastor wright issue and become president does not understand the U.S. at all. Most Brit commentators seem to be missing the boat here.

Fraser,

You might well be right. The reason is that with YouTube (which was only set up in 2005) there is now a distribution outlet for such an advert.

In the past the only realistic outlet would have been as a party political broadcast. However the tories might have shied away from being so bluntly negative, but also because the BBC refuses to run video of people in PPBs without their written permission.

This was why the anti regional assembly campaign in the North East was forced to use "stills" of those they featured in their referendum campaign broadcast.

The medium is important but lets not overlook the message.
Will someone ask Hillary and Chelsea Clinton to explain the difference between a lie and a double "mis-speak"?
