Cameron brings some clarity to the table

Peter Hoskin 6:27pm

Maybe it's just a slow Saturday, but the Conservatives' latest WebCameron video (see below) strikes me as one of the most effective yet. The pitch is straightforward: make an appeal to people who voted New Labour or who "have never voted Tory before".  So things like Sure Start and the minimum wage get a namecheck.

But, aside from that, it's striking just how clearly and unequivocally Cameron sets out Tory commitments such as recognising marriage in the tax system. Indeed, the passage on the "root causes of our social breakdown", and how the Tories would deal with them, harkens back to his powerful address at the party conference.  Only, this time, it's a bit more conversational.  And there's a greenhouse in the background.

To my mind, this caps off a decent couple of days from the Tory leader.  He gave a speech in Scotland last night which was much more direct and punchy than some of his recent efforts.  This line, in particular derserves pulling out:

"The cuts that are coming: make no mistake - they are Gordon Brown's cuts.  That is his inheritance to Britain."
And here's that video:

I watched it and its pretty good. BUT to my knowledge, very very few of his target audience actually watch these videos. The target is Labour waverers whilst the actual audience is Tory members and people on his email list (and readers of this right wing blog).
Perhaps though its main use is in helping DC practice his message for when people are watching like in the TV debates.
That's the thing with people saying this will be the 'internet election'. Its not. I have never seen a Labour video. Its probable that most people who voted Labour last time have never seen a Tory video.

There is some way to go I think. Last week I attended a class reunion, and it was remarkable to what extent my classmates were sick to death of politicians and British politics. Whilst chatting, I began to get the idea that if any political party stood up (so to speak) and said 'we are not corrupt, have never been corrupt and will never be corrupt' they would win by a landslide.

I watched your video and thought David Cameron came across as a very as a thoughtful, nice person, striking the right notes to broaden the conservative appeal.

Contrast this with his brutal destruction of Mr Brown in the commons and, I think he has struck the right balance.

If Mr Brown wants to appeal to women it’s no good looking for their sympathy when you landed everyone in the proverbial. Much better to be a kind caring guy who can step up to the plate when needed. 10-0 David Cameron.

It is what people say in the pubs and clubs which will have the effect. Those that have lost their jobs in the recession, and their families and friends, will be blaming Brown. It is how they vote. Will they be attracted to Cameron?

My view is that by refusing to mention Immigration many people who are genuinely worried about jobs and immigration. The serious concern about the numbers allowed in may well go to the only party that actually talks about immigration. I certainly do not mean the Ukip who should just amalgamate with the BNP.

Agree it's a good video but the people who need to see it probabaly won't. Preaching to the converted.

To pick up on one topic, marriage.

Recognising marriage in the tax system. The argument seems to go that married couples stay together longer so we should encourage marriage. Why do married couples stay together longer? It’s nothing to do with tax. It’s to do with type of people that get married. Does anyone really think that if we manage to encourage people to get married, who would not previously have married, because of a few pounds they are going to stay married and in a relationship that is good for their children longer than if they had not got married? It really doesn’t make any sense at all. All it will do is increase the separation / divorce figures.

What a naive narrow-minded guy is Cameron.
Despite, good intentions.

Marriage, what marriage.

The main issue is philosophy - the relativist narrative dominating in ethics, promotig "egalitarian" mediocrity and parasytism, and in the end nihilism, barbarity and tyrannical customs everywhere - in family life, social structure, and institutions.

So let's take these two creatures with the same moral of the type "good is what is good for me", and marry them. Hourra!! Mendelsohn plays. Problems solved.

Will it ever make the slightest bit of difference who we have in power. Good honest hard working people will continue to be the hardest hit with practically everything conceivable taxed. What will our hard earned cash be used for ? To line MP's pockets with extravagent expenses. In my mind and many others they are deplorable scumbags who for some reason we vote in to make our lives a misery. Brown is bad but Cameron will prove to be every bit as bad as he looks after his rich chums and the working class pay over the odds for absolutely everything !

But Tim, if Cameron did not put out the video, then people would say that the Tories are not doing everything to get their message across.

As you say it lays the ground for the election.

Hague has been rehearsing the line as well - apparently pointing out there two choices “It’s between change or ruin.” .

I suppose the Foreign Legion put it more bluntly, 'March or Die', but that is what the country has to face up to.

Excellent video that needs to be seen, it would make a good party political broadcast.
He was quite nice about some of things labour have done, can you imagine Brown doing the same.

That was a great speech but sometimes he gets too wordy, for example…
“But there's one last thing I want to say. I spoke about this earlier in the week, and I want to repeat what I said, because it's incredibly important and I want everyone to hear it clearly”.

See what I mean those four words sound earnest, but don’t lend themselves to the passage.

Unless I’m just nit picking and I welcome comments that disagree

perhaps the increase in VAT to 20% should be accompanied by a name change in the tax itself, to reflect the reason for the increase?

Strapworld, that would just get the trolls going.
We'd have wall to wall Bradshaw, Balls, Denham & Cooper on the TV.
It would be a modern Valentines Day Massacre

Well done ... it's very good. But it needs to be on the telly! Please keep it up Mr Cameron - you are very impressive. (And please, please, please don't start unburdening yourself on television and please don't cry - ever ..)

A fairer society? The economy?

Does he really believe we think he can do anything about anything while he's just a henchman for a foreign power? euroland?

And all those glottal stops and funny vowels and 'we're gunna's. No pretence or ambition of ever being a British Statesman there, then! Just another confirmation of his lower stratum performances at QT.

What a pathetic apology for Britain.

Excellent piece to camera guaranteed to frighten Labour and the LibDems. Suggest it's used as a formal Conservative Party Political Broadcast.

Like the fact that the background looks so casual, spur of the moment and uncontrived i.e. no sitting in an armchair, in front of a roaring fire with a bookcase and flowerpot in view.

"very very few of his target audience actually watch these videos"

Don't need to. People who don't pay much attention pay attention to those who do and if that second group are wandering the interweb then it trickles down at work etc. Even if all they're doing is not slagging Cameron off as much as they normally would the Tory leader then it has an effect. Can't outweigh al Beeb but it creates a bit of competition at least.
