Ashcroft returns fire but the ‘scandal’ rolls on

David Blackburn 2:48pm

Lord Ashcroft looks like a man not to cross and he will do anything to protect his privacy. He faces down criticism with complete silence, patient before turning on his detractors. According to the Sunday Times, Ashcroft has attacked Labour over its ‘smears’ about his tax status. His tone is derisive but his intention is clear: back off.

He has obtained documents held by the Labour party, detailing its strategy to expose Ashcroft. One activist wrote: ‘Think the Guardian most likely to go for it.’ Smart chaps these Labour wonks. Sure enough, the front page of the Observer trails an interview with Eric Pickles, who is ‘frustrated’ by his deputy’s obfuscation.  Reading Pickles’ comments, the alleged frustration is elusive. Pickles does not know Lord Ashcroft’s status and believes that Ashcroft has a right to privacy. No change there then and none from Ashcroft, who reiterated his promise to pay full UK tax if the law changes, which suggests that Sir George Young did not “misspeak” under the pressure of Emily Maitliss’ delightful interview technique.

This story of furtive wealth, and its connotation of affluence for influence, becomes increasingly absurd. It does not matter; even if Ashcroft confirmed the wide suspicion that he was a ‘Non-Dom’ he would not have transgressed existing rules. But his inscrutability is an amphetamine for those whose pious hearts are easily outraged. Will next Sunday’s Observer front page carry a headline bearing the words Ashcroft, tax and scandal? As ‘the Duke’ might have said: you can bet your sweet life it will.

I cannot understand if, as we are led to believe, that Labour have the same problems with non doms why we have not seen more of them. Apart from 1 attack last week on Lord Paul there has been nothing, who are they and where are they ?.

This pathetic non story was tackled by Tim Marshall on Sky this morning and George Osborne put it straight in the bin where it belongs.
For heavens sake the country is practically in the bin and stupid boring journalists keep on dragging this crap up,I think it is because interviews are subject to time limits,so if the pathetic presenters spend their entire time asking a question that NO ONE,except Ashcroft has to answer,it stops the viewer from hearing the Conservative policy. This FAILED TODAY on bothe Sky and the BBC.
Osbourne WIPED THE FLOOR with Marshall and got his point across with ghusto.
We want to know what the parties are going to do to get us out of the financial quicksand Brown has thrown us into,NOT Ashcroft's tax affairs.
The Conservatives have said this will be sorted when they are in government,so in a position to actually do something about this side issue.
Michael Gove spat in the eye of Andrew Marr.
Gove IS PASSIONATE about the criminally insane Balls's education department, how the huge budget is creamed off by various people leaving nothing like the original budget for schools..
Gove KNOWS 'poor' children are just as intelligent as any 'posh' kid.
The problem is Labour.
Their obsession with tests.A generation are experts at multiple answer questions and have been robbed of a all round education.
Milliband sounded as deluded as the rest of the Labour top bods.
Osborne is passionate about fixing Brown's mess and Gove is absolutely passionate about the education af ALL British children.
BOTH showed a POSITIVE,DETERMINATION to make this country a world player again and BOTH came across very genuine.
I am impressed as a voter,Labour have nothing but smears and wild accusation.
Milliband sounded as deluded as the rest of the Labour top bods.

David, you are right : Ashcroft looks an extremely unpleasant person. But hey! Who cares?

So long as his dosh has gone towards defeating Liebour in enough crucial marginals to bring Bruin down he will have served his purpose.

What entails criminal stalking in this country? Can organisations be collectively guilty of stalking?

I think the Police should investigate these activities and take approriate action against the officers of the party if criminal activity is discovered.

They should account for such actions in court.....

# Vulture.

Do try to be fair, if you can: DB merely said Ashcroft looked like a man not to be crossed. He did NOT say that Ashcroft 'looks an extremely unpleasant person'.

Your snide comment is a sadly typical product of the mindset of all socialist trolls.

Months of this !...If Ashcroft wants to be a political player , then he should deal with this once and for all . It makes him and the cons look grubby and evasive.

For god sake just be HONEST and get it out in the open .

Then go after Paul/Mittal etc

Next time a BBC journalist asks the question, perhaps the response should be to ask if they, paid as they are from taxpayer's money, would mind making public their tax affairs?

That is the principle at stake here. Are all individuals' tax affairs private and if not, then surely, all should be made public?

Of the UK's 61 million souls I guess no more than 200 know and care about Lord Ashcroft.

Many more know and care about a bankrupt economy, uncontrolled immigration, particularly of those would kill us, and the accretion of power by the Euro-tossers in Brussels.

But we mustn't talk about that must we?

Well Osborne certainly spanked Marshall on Sky over the issue this morning. It's clear enough, if Ashcroft has done anything illegal he'll have to face HMRC, if not then this is NuLab pissing in the wind.

Anyway, as others here have said, what about Labour's interesting funding? There are several very nasty things under stones there. I think Ashcroft knows much, much more than he's saying about such things. I suspect he's keeping his powder dry, and the election hasn't been called yet. Things will get pretty savage when it is.

I have just watched the Marshall-Osborne exchanges. I used to think Marshall was a competent foreign affairs reporter; he most certainly is not a competent interviewer. It was a transparently biased line of questioning. He signally failed to answer Osborne`s question whether he had put the donor question to Miliband earlier in his programme. It looks as though Sky News has joined forces with the BBC as a conduit for Labour propaganda.

The difference in the case of Lord Ashcroft is he is Deputy Chairman who runs the controversial marginal seats campaign from Con HQ and exerts real influence and power, unlike his Labour counterparts.
