Brown and Piers

James Forsyth 8:20pm

Those who follow politics closely will watch Gordon Brown’s interview tonight with Piers Morgan knowing that Alastair Campbell prepped him for it, that Piers Morgan is a long time friend of Brown and that Brown finally agreed to be interviewed by Morgan as part of “the run-up to the election”, and that Brown once criticised Cameron in the most personal terms for his willingness to open up about his family life. But the audience for what Brown is doing tonight aren’t those who follow politics closely but rather those wouldn’t watch a traditional political interview. Its effectiveness will have to be judged through that prism.

As I said last weekend, I think the interview would have had more cut-through if so much of it had not been revealed in advance. On that front, it’s interesting that Kevin Maguire—a journalist exceptionally well connected to Brown’s circle—is laying the blame for this pre-briefing on Piers Morgan.

Who cares? House is on Sky One. Probably a more entertaining and less contrived option...

James,

Take a look at the comments on Twitter, Have Your Say at the BBC, and a host of general forum boards that are not politically orientated will give you an insight of the way people think of this man.

The vast majority of those commenting are not interested or think this interview is a cynical way of getting extra votes for Brown.

Not only is Brown demeaning the dignity of the post of Prime Minister but he is embarrassing the whole nation.

McGuire says it's Morgan's fault does he?

Bollocks, it'll have been cleared through the Fuherbunker before they leaked any of it.

I follow politcs closely but I'm afraid I never watch Morgan and won't be watching tonight.
I don't think I could stomach it.

This interview is propaganda, it is disturbing that ITV are allowing such a programme in the run up to a General Election.

We are bombarded by Government advertisments in the media, the YourGov is the most blatant piece of propaganda.

I'll stop venice-walling.

Can you change that photo? It looks like they're about to French kiss and its turning my stomach.

I find Brown stomach-churning at the best of times.

Derran Brown's A Night of Wonders is on Channel 4. I think that is far more likely to appeal to people not interested in politics than the Morgan and Moron Show on ITV.

Even people who don't follow politics know enough about Brown not to want to listen to him for an hour.

The alarmingly erratic and dysfunctional Brown has achieved yet another record low in terms of appalling and distasteful behaviour. One just wonders what the next awful piece of gutter politics will come from this man.Damian McBride is clearly not forgotten by the unworthy, unelected person squatting in Downing Street.Shameful.

It's becoming quite good sport observing Gordon Brown shamefully and systematically dismantling himself in public, as he does so reliably.

It's a shame that he's also humiliating the British people in so doing, but we're rather used to that after 13 years of Marxism-by-stealth.

It'll take some time for us to recover from more than a decade of the most appalling government in modern British history, but we'll do it.

And the Labour Party will rot in hell, thank goodness.

Programme title:

Piers Morgan's Life Stories

14 Feb 2010 22:15
Channel / station:

ITV1 London
Subject:

Political Imbalance
Description:

Tonights Piers Morgan interview with Gordon Brown contravenes just about every element of section 5 of the OFCOM broadcasting code but particularly 5.8, 5.9 and 5.10.

The interviewer is a friend of Gordon Brown, and the interview was planned as a pre-election political broadcast "I had asked him three or four times and he'd said no, but then they went away at Christmas and he and Sarah talked about it and about other things they might do in the run-up to the election, and after that he said yes." (Piers Morgan source Independent on Sunday 14-02-2010).

In my opinion the impartiality of the interview and the obvious and blatant political usage of the broadcast airwaves in this manner contravenes section 5. It does so with complete disregard for due impartiality or reason.

I urge OFCOM to investigate this with all due haste and I make this complaint in good faith as an independent, non-aligned viewer.

My Wife watched it, and said GB came across well. I'm sure the Campbell Mind Control will have worn off on her by election day, but it is clear this interview was aimed squarely at a specific audience - those with Votes, but with no interest in Politics, but with a keen interest in 'Human Interest' stories.

I'm sorry to say I didn't watch it, as it contained P Morgan - and after his behaviour over the Iraq War forged photos, I vowed never to look at or read anything by him again. I cannot say on here what his actions resulted in, as it would be probably be actionable, given the UK's current legal system, but let's just say he's NOT popular amongst the UK Military...

Just finished watching the interview, I am surprised that so many have commented already its only 39 sedonds ago wow......maybe there people here with the power of forsight.
Ok well as interviews go its not Piers best but not his worst. He does do a go job of making GB look human and I am sure there will be many viewers completely stunned by the contrast of Gordon the man and the one portrayed by the media and those political hacks.
Will it change the outcome of the election? .... it just might!!!!

We should get Morgan in the chair himself and point out the multitude of questions he did not ask Brown.

Like why did nobody stand against him? Why did he sign up 125% of labour MPs on his nomination papers

And thats before we get to ignoring advice on taxing pensions and selling gold

Sorry Gordon, but I won't be watching tonight,
At the end of the day, the only proper way to respond to the interview tonight and the kind of manipulation that it represents is to avoid it.
It was when I realised that the transcript of the interview was available in the newspapers and when I realised that his media savvy wife would be sobbing in the background - well that did it for me.

It is also to protect myself - as if I did watch it I might vomit.

No, I know all I need to know about Brown. And it is not primarily because his political judgement and values are not mine. It is because I have formed my opinion of his character. I suspect that when history judges him, he will be seen as the most ill suited PM of my increasingly lengthening lifetime. His character and intelligence is fatally flawed. He will seen as a man without real principle and moral compass. A man unfit for leadership and whose toxic legacy will live with us for a generation.

Good to see more of the personal side of the PM. He did great. Why does people keep on rubbishing a hard working PM who wanted more for the country than for himself

I think this interview will be discussed more by people working in the media rather than the bulk of voters. Remember ‘Kinnock the movie’ at the start of the 1987 election campaign, which purported to show a modern, aspiring leader with a loving wife and a ‘normal’ background The broadcast was very professional. It received lots of hype in the media. What was the result in that election? The Tories won with a majority of about a hundred. It probably had little effect on the outcome.
