YouGov has Labour up one and the Tory lead at five but the story getting all the attention this evening is the claim that Samantha Cameron might have voted Labour previously

James Forsyth 12:09am

Tonight’s YouGov poll has Labour up one and the Tory lead down to five points. There’s also a BPIX survey in the Mail on Sunday which suggests that the Ashcroft operation might only net the Tories an extra 13 seats. While the News of the World reports on a Unite-led campaign to boost the Labour vote in the marginals.

But the story getting the most buzz is the Mail on Sunday’s that Samantha Cameron might have voted Labour when Blair was leader. Samantha Cameron has flatly denied this.

The story has been caused by Ed Vaizey telling a coming Andrew Rawnsley documentary on Cameron that Samantha ‘would be going into this poll thinking “Is Cameron the real deal or should I stick with Brown?”’ It seems that Vaizey was, albeit rather clumsily, trying to make the point that Samantha Cameron is not a tribal Tory. However, I doubt that this story will do any harm to Cameron D. It might upset some Tories but I suspect that some swing voters might find it rather appealing.

So what if she voted Labour? So what if she still votes Labour? Presumably she's a free individual, not the chattel of her husband. Nor, presumably, do you consider that politicians should politically vet their partners.

I don't know why masochistic trade unions fund New Labour. And I am not at all convinced about this North West business, the traditional Labour vote there being largely Catholic in addition to being, as everywhere, economically left-wing (certainly when compared to New Labour), morally and socially conservative, and patriotic.

But the fact remains that Unite is an enormous organisation the members of which pay their full whack of tax in this country, indeed rightly have no option not to.

This is not just one of your silly village non-stories: it is an insult to your readers and to David Cameron and Samantha Cameron by suggesting that it is news that she can think for hereself about her vote and by implying that she should do as she is told on matters like voting.
I would have an even lower opinion of Cameron if he had chosen to marry on nthe basis of submissive malleability. But it seems he didn't.Good for him,and good for her, whichever way she votes.

It is also a non-story since she has denied it.

Didn't she used to share a flat with the guy from Massive Attack?

Hardly surprising she voted Labour.

And did we ever find out if the bloke in the dungarees dancing in a field looking spaced out as featured on the Guy Fawkes site was in fact David Cameron. It didn't half look like him!

As for the poll dip I am pleased to say I saw that coming long before the Speccie commentators. As soon as the Tories positioned themselves as looking to start cutting back on people's conditions of employment and pension rights, that was when - quite rightly - they start an inexorable decline in the polls.

The real problem for the Tories is that they have no populist voice in the front rank - no Tebbit for instance. Wall to wall Etonianism is a real turn off for the mass of people.

It's a great, great shame we don't have a Conservative Party that can give voice to people's concerns but the Spectator is itself much to blame in this having encouraged the elitist drift of recent years.

This story really is a nasty attack against Samantha to chink David’s armour. Its well known Samantha is gentile and not as outspoken and confident as Mrs Brown. I consider this well below the belt of gutter journalism. Its psychological warfare in scientology wrapping – when it gets this low before an election one should
remember… lose lips sink ships, yesterdays news was wrapped up in chips…

If this is the Buzz…I want my Honey back…

Don’t worry Samantha…at least you get to vote…Bravo Suffragettes :)

PS…and could commentators please stop bullying newcomer Richard otherwise you will be branded with CNP…Conservative Nasty Party on your backsides. He’s not Dyslexfick…but those who torment him are…

As predicted, the personal attacks on Mrs Cameron have started.

Well, this is an interesting development. How long before we see personal attacks on the spouses and partners of others - such as Clegg and his colleagues or all of the Labour Front Bench?

I suppose that this is an extension of the active involvement of/by Mrs Brown in her husband's policies and politics. A pity, really, that the old fashioned concept of never involving one's spouse in ones' profession or job has been cast aside.

Buy Brown, get Sarah. Buy Ed, get Yvette and so on. A grim prospect indeed.

What method do we have of considering these spouses when deciding how to cast our votes? Will they provide individual manifestos or merely countersign their partner's - rather like apparently unscrutinised mortage documentation, for example....

Oh look, another non-story. Ignoring the facts that a) Ed Vaizery knows nothing about it, b) why spend weeks campaigning then vote against your own work?, c) we have a secret ballot and the votes are gone so you'll never have confirmation anyway.

So, it's a story that a) is unconfirmable either way, b) could help the Tories in marginals, c) is about someone's right to privacy, and you really do have one when voting.

Do the journalists of the Spectator ever stand back and take an objective look at this site, and realise just how mind-numbingly trivial some of the stories are? This is a prime example. If there is anything here of any relevance at all, will somebody point it out? And while you're at it, most of the other blogs in the coffee house this week.

What a waste to have a university education and a position on a serious platform, and never write anything but gossip and irrelevant crap. Buck your bloody ideas up.

This is so ridiculous. Here we have responsible politicians, journalists presumably Editors etc. All chattering away about this RUMOUR!

The only way this story can be proved is by producing her actual voting paper!

Now, as voting is supposed to be a secret occupation is it not? Therefore this '''story''' cannot be proved.

Mrs Cameron should instruct her lawyers and a healthy cheque, which will pay for her Wisteria to be pruned very regularily, must be forthcoming, as the Mail on Sunday and the person who started this silly childish rumour may well face a large bill in the civil courts.

I believe Mrs Cameron has to sue. Just to show the newspapers that stories will have to be watertight before they print!

But this is another nail in the coffin of the free press. Compared with the greats of yesteryear the modern editors and journalists are pygmies.

We must never let it be forgotten that The Daily Mail was the newspaper that supported Hitler.

It is well known today for its bigoted stance on many issues. Back in the 1930's it was worse, with the paper being sympathetic towards Oswald Mosley and the British Union of Fascists. The then owner, Lord Rothermere, supported both Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini.

The past should not be forgotten and the Daily Mail should be regarded as the rag it is.

Please, Mrs Cameron, show the steel we do not see in your husband. Sue the Daily Mail/Mail on Sunday

So what?, as Ballsy might say.

I first had the vote in 1979 and was going to vote Labour but I couldn't find the polling station.

Since I switched to the Tories, I've never had any trouble finding where to vote.

Looks increasingly like the barclays are trying compete with dirty des' OK magazine by turning the speccie into a hot gossip mag.

As Rhoda says, our entire fourth estate is veering toward a national enquirer type standard. If it ain't scandal, gossip or involves anything technical or requiring brainpower, our journos are too fat from their partisan dripfeeds to get off their arses and investigate or report it.

Its just another form of dumbing down.
