Vaizey drops Cameron in it (again)
Peter Hoskin 3:39pm
Michael Wolff's portrait of David Cameron in the latest issue of Vanity Fair is well worth reading, even it it's a weird kind of a beast. Wolff concludes – at the start of the piece, as it happens – that he's "impressed" by the Tory leader. But then spends the best part of 2,000 words spraying out quotes and observations which will harden the attitudes of Cameron's detractors, on both the left and the right. Cameron is a "toff"; Boris doubts his "intellectual bona fides"; the Tories have "anti-riffraff" policy on marriage, and so on. Wolff even quotes one Fraser Nelson, saying that he doesn't "believe for a minute [Cameron] believes protecting the N.H.S. is a good idea".
The quote which really jumped out though – particularly after his SamCam slip-up for the Rawnsley documentary last night – is this from Ed Vaizey:
Ok, so plenty of CoffeeHousers may find that reassuring. But I doubt the Tory leadership will be too pleased at Vaizey suggesting that Cameron is different from how he presents himself – particularly as Labour are always so keen to launch "behind the mask"-style attacks. It's probably reaching the point where the Camerons are considering a gagging order on their friend Ed."[Cameron] is, I believe, much more conservative by nature than he acts, or than he is forced to be by political exigency."

Berk. It's one thing to be candid, another thing to voice random opinions and conjecture. Vaizey must know full well how his quotes will be treated. If he can't give an interview properly, I doubt he can run an office, yet alone a ministry.

These quotes stood out for me when I read the piece over the weekend :
“What I’ve tried to do is marry a belief in market economics with the importance of a strong economy while restoring the condition of the Conservatives’ being social reformers and also addressing the future—climate change and the environment. It’s the full kind of package.”
and
“In U.S. terms, he could be a moderate Democrat,” says party adviser Ian Osborne.
I'm wavering again!

March 9th, 2010 4:21pm Report this commentThe quote from Nelson is much more 'unfortunate'.
Either Nelson doesn't have a clue - something I'm increasingly coming to suspect - or he was badly misquoted. He needs to sort this out or keep his mouth firmly shut in the presence of unknowing America journalists.
The one thing Cameron can not be accused of is an uncaring attitude towards the NHS. He has had too much first-hand experience for which he has expressed his gratitude to be anything other than a believer in universal health care.
Now, of course, that need not be the NHS structured as we know it today but any ideas of restructuring or reforming the delivery of universal health care are very far from being dismissive of the NHS, as Nelson so carelessly implies.

March 9th, 2010 4:44pm Report this commentDoes this not just confirm the view that came out of the "When Boris met Dave" TV prog. They just could not tie Cameron down! At a time when the Tories really need a conviction led patriotic poltician they have Dave! I would rather have Boris; at this rate he could be running the Party in early May!

All anybody with half a brain should be thinking about is getting rid of Gordon. Camerons the only option so even Verity should suck a lemon and lend Mr Cameron the vote. And please would you all stop moaning. Except Richard (who IS Ed Balls), he should keep saying the things he says, it cheers me up knowing that my secondary modern school education has left me a level headed normal decent taxpayer rather than the bitter and twisted 'grabber' that Balls private education has given him. Balls and his Mrs. What a disgusting pair of (grabbing) champagne socialists.
