Another considerable lead

Peter Hoskin 2:27pm

More encouraging news for Boris, on the day that he formally launched his mayoral campaign. The latest YouGov / Evening Standard poll puts the Spectator’s candidate 10 percentage points clear of Ken Livingstone. He also leads Ken on second preference votes.

Admittedly, it’s a bit down on his 12-point lead of two weeks ago. But at least it proves that wasn’t a freak result. The tide is certainly in Boris’s favour.

UPDATE: Over at Red Box, Sam Coates wonders whether Boris might scrap the congestion charge.

The polls give us reason to think that Boris and Dave could be in power within the next couple of years. What could they do to match the abolition of the Assisted Places Scheme and the granting of independence to the BoE in those dog days of spring 1997? Abolition of the congestion charge would be great, with people free to choose alternative means of transport to the car if they didn't like queuing, while those who could not avoid travelling across London would avoid having their pockets picked. Nationally, repealing the legislation adopting the social chapter would, amongst other things, allow consenting adults in the workplace to discuss matters without the employer-hating demon forcing them to talk to each other like retarded children (guess how my afternoon has been spent?)

Crime first, Boris. Zero tolerance and all that. Show that determination, and it's in the bag.

The Uber Left seem really annoyed by these results and are pulling out all the stops in a campaign that seems more about stopping Boris at any cost rather than promoting their own candidate(s).

Daily Politics was wall to wall Labour with Sian Berry cosying up to New Labour and urging green voters to choose Ken as alternative because he would not be such a "disaster" as Boris.

Typical Left - democracy only works when the candidate for the Left gets voted in. Anything else is just not fair. Off to Zimbabwe Ms Berry - Mugabe needs some tips about holding on to power against the will of the people. Greens I am surprised at you!

Channel 4 News followed this lead with genuine alarm in their reporting that Boris could be so popular.

Scraping the congestion charge is a winner.
