A present from Harriet to Boris

Peter Hoskin 11:58am

Will the gaffes ever stop coming?  Just a matter of weeks after Jacqui Smith admitted she has police protection when walking around London, the Daily Mail have caught out Harriet Harman for wearing a "stab-proof" vest whilst touring Peckham, in her own constituency.  The image is gold for Boris, particularly as he majored on violent crime at his campaign launch yesterday.

Meanwhile, Harman did further damage with her agitated performance on Today this morning.

How dare the BBC question the motives of a Labour minister! Whatever next - will it be admitting a Tory government might ever again be formed? Come on! A gift for Boris, yes, and William Hague tomorrow, I should have thought.

It is the clearest demonstration of how detached from us the political elite think they are. They fear the ordinary public as some seething mass of base creatures.

Oh, come off it. It's not a big deal, and this has been blown out of proportion. As an ex-reporter I have been invited on many police outings and they've said can you wear this, and I've said yes. Alternatively, I've asked them. This story is a dud, even if she is a politician. Must be a quiet news day elsewhere.

What a marvellous distillation that brief interview was of the main characteristics of our Ministers: petulant, self-righteous, humourless, specious, condescending, disdainful, morally superior, introverted, blinkered, hectoring and of course unapologetic to the last.

TWJ: as a member of a Party which practises the blackest of political dark arts, she's hypocritical to get all lah-de-dah when a bit of sword gets aimed her way, don't you think?

salieri - couldn't agree more, all adjectives spot-on. At the risk of being accused of sexism, why is it that New Labour women ministers are pretty well all even more awful than the men? Harman, Hewitt, Beckett (worst ever For Sec?) - all hectoring, condescending, authoritarian and incompetent to the nth degree.

Tiberius, the answer is simple. No.
