Cameron denounces Labour's "lies"

James Forsyth 11:57am

David Cameron’s press conference this morning was ticking along rather uneventfully until James Landale asked Cameron a question that set the Tory leader off on one about, what he called, "Labour’s complete and utter lies."

Cameron had started off by talking about how pleased he was that we going to be a father again, letting slip that he and Samantha had been trying for another baby for a while, and with some remarks on the lobbying scandal and the Budget. There had been questions on Ashcroft and cuts but nothing had really got going. Then, James asked Cameron about a Lib Dem plan to scrap the winter fuel allowance for pensioners under 65. At this point, Cameron’s whole demeanour changed. He stood with his legs apart, stared straight ahead and denounced as “lies” Labour claims that the Tories would scrap the winter fuel allowance, free TV licenses and free bus travel for pensioners. Not satisfied with that, Cameron went on to denounce the Labour politicians responsible as “appalling people”

This is the second flash of genuine anger we have had from Cameron in recent weeks. The first, came at PMQ when Labour backbenchers heckled that the former military men who were criticising Brown’s record on defence were ‘Tories.’ Personally, I’m in favour of Cameron letting his anger show. It is authentic and what he gets cross about is what we should get cross about — generals' patriotism being impugned, lies being told for political advantage and the like.

Yes, its high time that Dave reflected the rage that the rest of us feel abt the gang of corrupt criminals now in power.

Landale, despite being an Old Etonian, is, like most BBC journos, an oleganeous little Liebour stooge. I once reviewed a book he wrote abt an ancestor of his who killed a man in a duel in Kirkcaldy. (Bruin's constituency). It contained a quite unnecessary little footnote greasing up to the Prime Monster.

We have wondered why Cameron has never, ever, used the word "lies" against the dishonest Labour accusations. Now that he has started, let's hope he continues. Because that is how most people regard every single utterance from a Labour MP's lips .....

Yes, but why not scrap the ridiculous winter fuel allowance for all? For those who need the money put it on the State Pension. For the rest it will save the State the cost of a bloody good dinner - which is what mine went on.

He needs to do more of this, given the standard rebuttal from the bunker is denial, i.e. to lie.

Yep. One word also neatly sums up my sentiments about the bunch of political gangsters and shysters that have been purporting to govern this nation for 13 utterly disastrous years: rage.

The regrettable fact is that when the rage of the greater citizenry starts getting vented on our streets later this year and into 2011 (a forthcoming consequence of draconian cuts in state spending and services that are inevitable), the gangsters and shysters I referred to earlier will have long since left the scene (as usual).

Like I've said before, I'm looking forward to somebody like Niall Ferguson doing a post hoc forensic analysis of the socio-economic catastrophe that will, with hindsight, mark the past 13 years of Marxism-by-stealth courtesy of Blair, Brown, Balls and Co.

Damn their eyes, the lot of them.

"Personally, I'm in favour of Cameron letting his anger show."

Indeed. Drew Westen's 'The Political Brain' makes a compelling case in this respect. If your opponent makes an unfair or unjustified criticism, esecially if it is against your values rather than just an individual policy, voters think you are weak if you respond to that in a cool, cerebral manner. From memory, I think Westen finds this holds true even if they agree with you on the issue in question. They respond well to the odd flash of anger 'in self-defence' because they are looking (subconsciously) for candidates to demonstrate strength and that includes fighting back when attacked.

Diane: politicians in particular should be careful about accusing people of lying. There is often (particularly in politics) a possibility of error or interpretation.

In this case, Cameron obviously knows that his party has no such plans, and so can use the word lie without fear of contradiction, smear, or obfuscation.

@ Moraymint

but it seems to me that the the Great British Public will not take to the streets or get otherwise motivated.

Leaving aside the groups that do routinely protest, the vast majority are pretty much disinclined to actually DO anything. It's only when a specific issue engages a specific group do things start to happen (Fox Hunting, G8 meetings, Fuel protests come to mind).

So it will need to be a pretty big event/catalyst that will get the UK to actually force a change. I see it more like salami slicing, with no single issue being big enough to get large numbers of people on the streets.

And then of course - even if we do get the UK to make their feelings known - what will be the caliber of politician to actually hear the message and enact a change?

The first indicator as to which future course we will take will be in the GE - large turnout might indicate folk are beginning to wake up and smell the coffee - low turnout would tend to indicate continued apathy and drift.

Not long now......

The comment about paying the fuel allowance with pension is right on the button. The current way it is paid is just about the most inefficient way of doing it. Very costly administratively. It is duplicitously maintained that way for simple political purposes by Labour. It should be paid in two simple tranches, on the state old age pension, at the end of November and at the end of February. This would not only save on adminstrative costs, it would save on the borrowing requirement (HMG cash flow) by delaying half the payment.

Labour ARE liars-FACT. Stephen Byers, Labour MP, ex-Labour Minister-said he saw Labours Lord Adonis and Labours Lady Mandelson and that they changed laws for him for money-they said he did/didn't/might have/can't remember/can remember etc-but the laws did change. So, SOMEONE is lying-and that SOMEONE is a Labour politician who has helped to trash this country. The thing that should be being raised here is the very calibre of those at the heart of Nulabour.

I tend to agree that there is not/won't be "one big thing" that rallies citizens to the streets: the Brits (still) don't really do that sort of French Revolution stuff.

However, one wonders if we shall witness/experience a kind of rolling thunder of street protest, with one thing after another motivating people to get out and shout.

My own view is that over the coming years we shall indeed experience a succession of "bad things" happening in our economy which result in adverse reactions across society.

These "bad things" will be associated one way or another with a drastic cutting of public services, the equally drastic cutting of welfare benefits (we're really stuffed if we don't make these sorts of cuts), spiralling energy costs (and all that flows from that, as developing economies demand more energy than the earth can supply), the failure of our economy to shift readily into growth (partly because of those high energy costs), a lack of employment opportunities, continued tensions around uncontrolled immigration and our already overcrowded landscape, evermore stifling costs, laws and other restrictions emanating from the EU, and so on and so forth.

Our political caste has lost control and lost the plot over the past 15 years or so; we've been governed appallingly badly. We've now reached a tipping point. The next few years and beyond will bring a sea change in the way this country looks and feels. It's not going to be pleasant and some of our politicos know this.

How our politicians handle Britain's transition to a new and much poorer era will be interesting, to say the least.

Theres a very simple solution to the winter fuel allowance to make it fairer and thats to increase state pensions by that amount and scrap the WFA. Those on low incomes wont pay tax on the pension increase and those on high pensions will pay 40% tax on it. Throw in the civil servants you could downsize and the cost & savings will be a wash.
