In honour of Martin Luther King

Forty years ago today, Martin Luther King was assassinated. Here is the end of the last speech by this great man and Bobby Kennedy's moving words on King's death which are, as Joe Klein says, some of the finest ever spoken.

It says something about Robert Kennedy - about how, for instance, his brother could get away with making him Attorney General, and about the hole he left at the heart of the Democratic Party when he died in turn - that he could speak of Aeschylus as his favourite poet, and quote him very much to the point. That was not written ahead of time by some hired writer or other: it was a man who had a serious education, who recognized and understood greatness, and who could make it speak for him.
