Numbers which show why the TV debates are priceless for Nick Clegg

Peter Hoskin 6:01pm

How valuable was the TV debate to the Lib Dems?  Well, we've seen the poll numbers, of course.  But the Electoral Commission has just released some figures which shine a different light on proceedings.  They show that the Tories received party donations totalling £1.46m in the first week of the campaign.  Labour, nearly £800k.  And the Lib Dems were way, way behind on £20,000.  So, Clegg & Co. are heavily outgunned financially - but they've still had the biggest upsurge in publicity and popularity.

True, donations to the Lib Dems have risen dramatically since the TV debate - but it's still unlikely that they'll reach Tory, or even Labour, levels of income.  In which case, the TV debates will continue to be the best publicity that money doesn't have to buy.

Rupert Murdoch also seems to be a good form of publicity spin and Scaremongering for the Tory's. Some of the articles published against Clegg have been ridiculous and a heavy influencer on those that don't bother to read policies themselves.

Yes, definitely maybe at least until his freshness stales which it will quite quickly in the media glare.

He doesn't really have anything to say about the deficit and our indebtedness and the public will cool quickly when they absorb the knowledge of his Europhilia, and his ideas on reducing the prison population.

Clegg - a seven day wonder, if that.

I see ComRes now puts Cameron up to 35%.
And yesterday he did the best PPB of any party's yet.
His new mood of attack augurs very well for Thursday Debate, which I back him to win narrowly from Clegg.
So steady as he goes - towards the finish line.

Cameron made a tactical error in agreeing to the TV debates. He focussed too much on Brown's likely ineptitude ... and has allowed Clegg to creep through on the blindside. Also, the media (including the so-called quality papers) have behaved like "Hello" magazine without applying discretion or analysis.

Nevertheless, I firmly believe Clegg will blow up. He is now being put under the microscope and is being found out, as witness Brillo's grilling earlier today.

What Clegg has done, however, is emphasise that Brown is now definitely finished - even within his own party. He's more than yesterday's man. Though Cameron still needs to be on top form in the debates, be more positive and start asking pointed questions of the other two.

Has anyone else just seen the bizarre LibDem broadcast on Channel 4? Utterly bizarre! First, Cleggie comes across all hysterical and then the camera cuts to Uncle Vince who appears to think he is already Chancellor, blabbering inane rubbish. Then, cue back to Clegg, hysterical again, who is so insincere that you can see the involuntary grin trying not to break out. Then it ends with Clegg almost looking in tears!

Based on this broadcast, Clegg is simply not ready for office. He looks unstable.

Just wait awhile and the vacuum will display itself. Cleggie has little to offer and Brown has no respect for the electorate.

Clegg will run into trouble if he wants to use his arguement that it is all Brown and Camerons fault for whatever. Clegg has aligned himself politically in voting with Liebore through his leadership and would do well to remember what, where, when. He has placed himself in the big league and can not afford to expect the NEW BOY treatment in the big league. Everyting he now says will be taken apart and disected. The light is on and we are watching you MR Clegg. You will not gt a free ride. This is our future and you are very lightweight.

Now just image what might have happened had Nigel Farage and Nick Griffin been invited along to the party too.

We can't cope with another 5 years of Gordon - especially in high definition.
