Ming offers lukewarm support for Nick Clegg
James Forsyth 10:33am
It is hard to imagine that this week could be as disastrous as last week for Nick Clegg, but Ming Campbell’s interview in the Independent this morning won’t have put a spring in Clegg’s step. Ming’s praise for his successor is hardly gushing. Take his response to this question: Would an experienced parliamentarian like yourself have led his party out of the Commons?

I have been punctilious in not second guessing the new leader. It is for him to decide strategy and tactics. This is politician-speak for, ‘it was a really stupid thing to do but I’m not going to say that’. To add insult to injury, Ming also gives a rather forceful answer to the question about how many women have you slept with. Indeed, with pretty much every politician who is interviewed being asked this question and giving the right answer, Clegg’s embarrassment is going to be prolonged for a while longer.

April 7th, 2008 12:42pm Report this commentfor gawd sake - so Clegg made an ill-advised blokey comment (in your dreams Clegg)to a wiley journalist - so what....his political career IS NOT FINISHED because of it - get over yourselves bloggers. Somehow, somewhere along the line this coffee house blogshop has become Cameron`s mouthpeice and is now so right-wingish and just soooooo boring. Lets get back to the real issues of the day and not lose sleep over the past love lives of the leader or the third party - a sense of perspective is needed.

April 7th, 2008 4:13pm Report this commentno Fergus I don`t, but if every byline is too Brown/Blair/Clegg bashing and contents are always cuddling up to Cameron/Osborne it becomes very sameish and less interesting/credible somehow. All a general right leaning reader of blogs wants is a sense of balance and less ranting - pleezzzzze

April 8th, 2008 1:42am Report this commenti'm with Maria on this - I use the blog media as a source of reference and reasoned discourse - if I want "bash em up" comments I can read the red tops or watch PMQs. I think the right has an opportunity (obligation?) to present the reasoned arguments in support of self reliance, pride in nation, inclusiveness based on merit and smaller government - we do not advance our cause by cheap shots - just my opinion...........

April 8th, 2008 3:17pm Report this commentMaria, you're wrong to assume all of the kicking of Clegg is from Tories. I'm a Lib Dem member and have been for 14 years. Clegg is useless. Ming was crucified by the media for his age but did nothing wrong. Clegg, by contrast, is slitting his own throat. He is fast becoming a joke and that is the worst fate a politician can suffer. We need someone competent to present the Liberal point of view in opposition to Brown and Cameron, and Clegg simply isn't up to it.
