The obstacles to a Lib-Lab deal
James Forsyth 2:35pm
The main development of this morning has been Labour MPs throwing up obstacles to a Lib
Lab deal. At the moment there are four main problems. First, David Blunkett and others arguing that Labour would be better off going into opposition and—this is implicit—letting the
Tories and the Lib Dems make the cuts. One union fixer told me Labour couldn’t go into a coalition with a party committed to cuts to benefits and tax credits. Second, Jon Cruddas, a champion
of party democracy, has demanded that the parliamentary party, the NEC and the unions be consulted on the terms of any deal. Third, there are lots of Labour MPs letting it be known that
they’d vote against AV so the Lib Dems might not get the main thing they want from a coalition. Finally, there’s speculation that if there was a Lib Lab deal a couple of Labour MPs
might refuse to take the whip.
Lib Dem MPs are gathering again this evening and the current expectation is that this meeting will endorse some kind of deal with the Tories. But as we have learnt over the past few days, everything is subject to change.

May 11th, 2010 3:08pm Report this commentI suggest a couple of million people convening tomorrow outside the gates of Buckhouse (or Windsor, if she's out of town) I'll start the chant. Peaceful, of course, we don't want to frighten her. How about it Paul Dacre? Announce it open your front page! Failing that how about a blog petitition to the Queen. Not enough people read these blogs, I suspect to get the momentum going. But isn't there a conservative hack with enough initiative to start the ball rolling. A peaceful march of the Right - or a mass-petition to the Queen. Either will make a start. If somebody doesn't do something soon to lance the boil, some whacko will resort to a political assassination, we don't want that, do we?
Pardon? Who said that!!?

May 11th, 2010 3:13pm Report this commentTypical Labour. They bring us to the brink of ruin and think it is better not to have to fix it but to oppose the government that is forced to fix it. The Tories must be prepared to play dirty and so change the UK into a small government, capitalist nation to ensure that the swamps that Labour have created are drained so that socialism is removed completely from the institutions of the nation so that Labour can never rise again.

May 11th, 2010 3:16pm Report this commentDoes anyone else sense we are heading into JG Ballard territory? One of the clearest indicators of desperate unreality was that 'Dr' John Reid and Adam Boulton appeared to be among the few voices of sanity yesterday.
I can feel English hackles rising in resistance to being relegated to mere impotent bystanders as odious, unelected parasites like Mandelson, Campbell and Adonis carve up even more of our electoral traditions in an attempt to secure their own narrow self-interest. It is not only 'not English' but indecent, and their presumption is crying out for rectification, preferably one involving gallows, or at the very least a diet of bread and water. A cataclysm cannot be far off.
More widely, there is absolutely no sense that any of these people - Brown, Cameron, Clegg, Steel, all the tired has-beens and recently-unemployed jerks that have thrust themselves before the pompous media dog and pony show on College Green - have any understanding of the gravity of their profoundly arrogant and short-termist actions. They might for all they seem to care be re-negotiating the terms of the terms of the Steve Biko Hall social committee. Truly a disgusting spectacle.

It seems like noone has ever had to negotiate before. Labour are saying this is as far as we go...Tories are saying no more on the table....libs are now impaled on their own duplicity.
If The Liberals drop PR/AV+1 then they have a choice of two ...stick to their demands they have a choice of zero.
So wind back two steps now where are the Liberals hearts?
Abstain is the most likely and then political wilderness for 30 years.
Join the tories and political wilderness 20 years. Join Labour and it all goes tits vertical equals wilderness for 15 years.
Poor old Cleggy....meanwhile the country goes to hell in a handcart.
What ever happens Clegg has pushed his party 10 steps forward but has to make a choice that will send them 8 or 9 back.
LOL its only bettered by watching Speccies dis-embowl themselves.

If it doesn't work out you are eminently qualified to become a hanging chad. Bon voyage.

Pity about needing references, eh, but don't worry, we'll all swallow our principles and offer them. Our loss is Florida's gain. But does the job involve working with ballot-papers? I think we should be told.
