Nadine Dorries' Kill Bercow email

Peter Hoskin 10:30am

Via PoliticsHome. If anything sways hearts and minds, then I suspect it will be the name of Sir Menzies Campbell among the "able and willing" replacement candidates:

Dear new Member,

Many congratulations and welcome to the House.

Please forgive me for this generic email being brief and to the point.

The first job of the House today is to appoint the Speaker. The Father of the House, Sir Peter Tapsell, will present a motion to the House that John Bercow remains as Speaker.

At this point, members will shout 'Aye', on this occasion there will also be members from all parties shouting 'No'. If enough members shout 'No', this will force a division and your first vote as new members will be to vote for or against appointing John Bercow as Speaker.

At this point, the green monitors will flash with the words 'Division' and the division bell will ring. This is a free vote and is entirely unwhipped and so whether to vote or not is wholly your decision. You will also have the option to abstain, and so you do not enter either of the voting lobbies.

Despite scare mongering by some left-wing commentators, there will be no repercussions according to which way you vote.

I am sure you are aware that during the previous Parliamentary term Mr Bercow was appointed as Speaker, with unanimous Labour and a handful of Conservative votes. In the words of a Labour whip, it was done to 'stick it to the Tories'.

That aside, there are a number of reasons why, since his appointment, Mr Bercow has proven unsuitable in the Speaker's role. Not least, on the occasions during the last session when Mr Bercow found remaining impartial, a crucial quality in the role of Speaker, very difficult, leading to a number of heated exchanges between the Speaker and Conservative MPs.

We are about to head into choppy political waters. It is imperative we have a Speaker who possesses dignity, gravitas, ability, wisdom and who can command respect from all sides of the House. A Speaker beyond reproach, who via his experience has earned the entitlement to such an important office.

There are a number of candidates from all sides imminently more suitable, able and willing; Edward Leigh, Sir Menzies Campbell, Alan Hazlehurst, and Margaret Beckett.

It is imperative that we are seen to begin this Parliament renewed and afresh. We can only do that with a democratic vote for the Speaker. If Mr Bercow wins the vote, he will have the endorsement of the whole House and not just the Labour party.

The Labour MP Kate Hoey, who is supporting the vote and I will be acting as tellers. If you come to the division lobby there will be members on the doors directing you to the lobby depending on which way you wish to vote. I am sure you understand the importance of this vote. I look forward to counting you out of the lobby during your first division.

With very best wishes,

Yours,

Nadine Dorries.

"Imminently". Dear God. One does wonder what is going on in the brain of someone capable of writing that.

There are a lot of people "imminently more suitable" to be an MP than the Christian fundamentalist nutter Nadine Dorries . And has she paid the £10K back yet?

Nice letter - what a pity her English is so poor. There may well be persons 'imminently' suitable, but the ones listed are presumably, according to Ms Dorries, 'eminently' suitable. Maybe she meant it that way, but I doubt it!

This is a personal crusade from Nadine (the MP who refused to say where here main home was and claimed thousands in expenses for a second home allowance she was not entitled to) who is acting out of spite.
I do not think Bercow was a bad speaker during his brief time in the last Parliament and as such he deserves the job on merit.
I expect he will still be speaker at the end of today.

Same comment as on the previous article:

Personalities aside, I want a Speaker who's totally committed to the supremacy of our national Parliament, not to the primacy of EU treaties and laws.

That immediately rules out Menzies Campbell.

Remember that it was Campbell who first reneged on the Liberal Democrat pledge to support a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty, in the last months of his leadership.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2007/sep/14/libdem2007.eu

I look down the lists of "ayes" and "noes" for Division 120 on New Clause 9 on the evening of March 5th 2008:

http://www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm200708/cmhansrd/cm080305/debtext/80305-0024.htm

and see that at least Edward Leigh was amongst those who voted in favour of affirming and protecting the supremacy of our Parliament, against the expressed wishes of David Cameron, while at least Kate Hoey did not troop through the "no" lobby with the rest of her Labour colleagues.

I take the simple and single-minded view that the presiding officer of the House of Commons should above all believe in our national parliamentary democracy, and with great passion; and just as in a previous age the Speaker should not have been the tool of the monarch so he should not now be the tool of the EU.

Get stuck in Nadine. It is high time the poisonous little weed got his comeuppance. It is a pity she didn't include a link to Simon Carr's excellent May 12th column in the Indy http://www.independent.co.uk/opinion/commentators/simon-carr/simon-carr-my-illtempered-encounter-with-the-speaker-1971405.html.

Perhaps this would be taken more seriously if Ms Dorries had managed to spell Sir Alan Haselhurst's name correctly. As it is it appears she's calling for the brother of the late Ronnie to stand. Which may lead to more music in the chamber but I suspect that he's unwilling and unable to stand.

And "imminently more suitable"? What on earth does that mean? Quicker to be suitable than the current Speaker?

Whats not to agree with in this letter? The new Parliament should vote on the Speaker. Personally i think he's a weasel but even if you are a fan then you should support the vote and back him. Simples.

O/T, but Caroline Spellman seems to be stumbling into another crisis of confidence in her ability to tell right from wrong.

First 'Nanny Gate', now 'Farm Gate' - how the new PM handles this should be seen as an early test of Cameron's authority.

'imminently'
really?
this usage is to present a sense of unrgency perhaps?

or just another elected representative who cannot use the english language correctly?
that statue of churchill must tremble with rage every time she walks into the chamber.

Sir Menzies Campbell's candidacy may sway hearts and minds. It certainly won't be the inability of Ms. Dorries to distinguish between "imminently" and "eminently".

If the biggest Dick in York wants Bercow as speaker, that should be enough to disqualify the nasty little man. Unfortunately I think there are too many spineless tories and LibDems who will either abstain or join the disgraced Labour MP's and vote for the worm Bercow.

Anybody who "Couldn't give a toss who is Speaker" clearly couldn't give a toss about our Parliament either.

Thank God they had no hand in choosing the Speaker in 1642.

http://explore-parliament.com/nssMovies/01/0199/0199_.htm

Our ancestors fought a bloody civil war and cut the head off one king, and later drove another king from his throne, to establish the authority of Parliament; no doubt there were also people at that time saying that they ""Couldn't give a toss who is Speaker".

Oh for goodness sake everyone - grow up. Yes she said "imminently" when she should have said "eminently". And it's only patronising if you understand everything about parliamentary procedures - which many won't. And what has her religion got to do with this unless you're a discriminating bigot?

Now onto the substance of her letter - that Parliament needs & deserves a much more able speaker? On that she has a point surely.

Denis Cooper - don't equate the authority of Parliament with that of Speaker (otherwise after 12 years of Speaker Martin there wouldn't be any Parliamentary authority).
The Speaker is now not much more than a ref. whilst the parties squabble.
The point I seek to make is it doesn't much matter who the ref is when the whole stadium is going up in flames.
