Watch Out for Woo Woo!

2:01pm

This is actually a pretty good piece of science:

Cancer treatments can be delivered straight to tumour cells using tiny magnets, saving healthy cells from their toxic side-effects, researchers said yesterday.

In fact, we might go so far as to call it nifty. Essentially, dope the bodies own cancer fighting cells with iron then use the magnets to concentrate them at the sites of tumours. Great, drug doses can therefore be lower, reducing side effects.

However, I do wonder how long it's going to be before this argument is used to support the wilder claims of those who use magnets in alternative therapies. You know, the Woo Woo factor? For I dimly recall that some already do make similar claims, that as haemoglobin is made with iron, as red blood cells are made of haemoglobin, then the magnets in your shoes work by making all the oxygen in your bloodstream flow to your toes or some such.

What will anyone give me? A couple of months before this is all over The Mail?
