Ambition should be made of sterner stuff

David Blackburn 1:03pm

Few writers can make a silly season story read like official history, so it's worth drifting behind the Times’ paywall to read Rachel Sylvester on Boris and Dave's mutual emnity. It is no secret that BoJo and DC are united in rivalry, but Sylvester adds a second dimension with insider quotations - a mix of arch witticisms and savage partisanship. Here are several of many from today’s column:

‘Most people at Westminster assume that Boris — compared by one of his editors to Marilyn Monroe, “another egomaniacal blonde” — still harbours ambitions to lead his party. As a boy he used to declare that when he grew up he wanted to be “world king”, so Tory leader would at least be a step on the ladder. Even as the results were coming in on election night, and Conservative high command was starting to panic about the lack of an overall majority, Boris’s sister Rachel Johnson tweeted merrily: “It’s all gone tits up — call for Boris!”

A minister loyal to Mr Cameron says: “He wouldn’t be welcome back in Parliament. People think he’s a loser, a charlatan, and that he has an over-inflated sense of himself. He can go and be a buffoon somewhere else.”

Sylvester compares this toffy-nosed drama to the plebian connivances at the heart of New Labour. Politics may well be cyclical and Boris may share the ambition that visibly defaced Gordon Brown. First, though, Johnson is expected to ape that other political maverick, Ken Livingstone, and run for mayoral re-election; in fact, the two mavericks are likely to go head to head. If Boris wins in 2012 against the odds and the government’s unpopularity, expect his ambition to become a little more diaphanous.

Here's the problem with the Times's paywall: no-one is going to 'drift behind the paywall' to read just one piffling article.

£1 for a single article? You've got to be kidding me!

But thanks for the post anyway David, although it's difficult to get a true feel for the article without a larger excerpt.

No, if those are the gems of the article, it's definitely not worth 'drifting behind the Times paywall' - have seen those or similar stories before thanks.

Are you absolutely sure CH isn't on some sort of commission from The Times?

I find the Saab backends that stalk me down the page a bit scary too.

Take it from me, it's never "worth drifting behind the Timesâ™ paywall to read" anything. The sooner you realise that, the better. By all means continue to inform us what's going on, but don't keep encouraging us to go there.

I think it's time for the Tory Right to stage a coup d'etat; bring down Dave and install BoJo as leader.

Boris may or may not still have an ambition to lead his party, but I'm quite sure his party has no ambition whatever to be led by him. And that's the end of the matter.

Boris is a joke, let him go and play with the traffic lights in London while the big boys run the country.
I find Times Online excellent and free if you subscribe to the newspaper.

Can you "drift behind The Times paywall" without paying?

Why is anyone worried about Boris Johnson as a possible Conservative leader; why does anyone consider him now a serious contender for that role ? We may be entertained by the performance, but we know enough about his sexual antics to know how selfish and ruthless he can be. Many people would be alienated by a man whose mistress underwent two terminations and whose mistress of last year probably bore his child . One doesn't have to be a prude to feel disgust at his lack of discipline.

Get yourself a decent browser and ad blocker. Firefox or Google Chrome will see the end of the end, if you get my drift.

Is it just me? Have I inadvertenly stumbled on a magic solution to that irritating Times strap across the top? On my computer, it's gone. It is no more. It is a dead and buried strap.

Is it still appearing on other people's computers??

My Spectator wasn't delivered this week. I've wrong up and been told that many people didn't get their copies delivered this week either. And then one comes on CoffeeHouse and has to put up with the *&*&&& Saab advert ruining the look and ease-of-viewing the page.

Whatever you say on this subject it is always rubbish. Boris will never lead the Tories and he knows this. The only people who seek a feud along the lines of blair/brown are the leader writers and gossip mongers. Suddenly we have have a press who have style and no substance! Tedium expantorame vector expectorant etc.

Sorry, it's Boris Johnson, Mayor of London being described here? How did Cameron do in the GE? Did he win? Is he a winner?

Is it really necessary to have four pictures of Alex Massie rolling up and down the right hand side of my screen as I scroll through these posts. If the Irish jig was acquired to distract from his weak mouth and effeminate features it was a failed experiment.

I deleted the Times from my Favourites as soon as the Dirty Digger started charging for content. I don't miss the Times at all. I wish CH would stop pushing Times pieces!

Old fogey, completely agree. Boris's adultery, and his lack of shame or sorrow over it, show he's not fit to inhabit any serious office. He won't be getting my vote again.

A nonsense Mr. Blackburn. Boris is another of the glorious eccentric politicians that this country produces.

He will never, ever be the leader of the Conservative party. Not ever. On to the next silly season piece of puffery.

If the next London Mayoral election prsents the possibility of a return of Ken Livingstone's venal, sectarian and nepotistic policies to power then it will be a deadly serious business. Vote for Boris.
