Vaz’s hand-grenade
David Blackburn 4:38pm
Lucy Manning reports
that Keith Vaz’s Home Affairs Select Committee will convene an investigation into the phone tapping scandal. Hauling Yates up before his eminence was a sleight of hand, calling for a second inquiry is as obvious as Jordan. Labour is
confident and Coulson is their target.
However, the Home Affairs Committee is more likely to examine the police’s inept investigations than the inner workings of a tabloid newsroom. (And so, according to Vaz, it will transpire.) Coulson will remain in the clear unless the CPS brings a prosecution on the basis of Sean Hoare’s new evidence.
Labour will catch some collateral flak if this appeal goes ahead – shadow-cabinet hopeful Alan Johnson has questions to answer over why he quashed the Guardian’s scrutiny of the Met’s original inquiries last year on grounds that the ‘fuzz’d resent it’. Which makes me wonder if Vaz’s decision reflects not the triumph of party but the resurgence of parliament? Almost certainly not, but one can but hope.
UPDATE: This is to be a written report without witness sessions according to the Beeb. Coulson is even safer now by my reckoning.

September 7th, 2010 4:49pm Report this commentNever mind Vaz's hand-grenade, what about this one:
"HMRC could take direct control of pay cheques after tax errors
HM Revenue and Customs could take direct control of every worker’s monthly pay cheque under plans to overhaul the error-prone income tax system. "
NO, for God's Sake NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

September 7th, 2010 5:05pm Report this commentMr Blackburn, Perhaps you would elaborate on your statement 'more likely to examine the police's inept investigations' Have you got evidence? or have you arrived at this conclusion on the biased BBC and the ridiculous Labour Party?
The obvious thing about this 'investigation' is that it could indeed will ruin any further investigation by the police.
The problem with Vaz is that he is a legend in his own mind and should have been charged, alongwith many more of the 'honourable' members over the expenses disgrace. One law for our rulers and another for us.
Perhaps we should be calling for a further investigation into all the expense claims by all 'honourable' members by the police?
I am absolutely sure that more criminal charges would arise from such an investigation. But that is now forgotten by the Spectator and most westminster bubble occupants.
My money is on Coulson surviving- although I do believe he is a most inappropriate appointment.

September 7th, 2010 5:20pm Report this commentLabour-dominated eh? They have certainly gone to extraordinary lengths to maintain their majority, with Janet Dean, Ann Cryer, Martin Salter and Margaret Moran all remaining members despite having stood down from Parliament at the last election.
Or, that could be the link to the Home Affairs Select Committee in the previous Parliament, when there was a Labour majority, rather than the current Committee with its majority of government MPs.

Yates to the committee this morning: 'It would have been better if we'd interviewed Neville.' Straight from the horses' mouth so to speak.

September 7th, 2010 5:50pm Report this commentIf only New Labour had cared tuppence about personal security when they were in office. If they had, they might not have lost all those Social Security Records or all the names, dates of birth and addresses of every child in the UK or all prisoners. Perhaps they would have tried harder to stop hackers interfering with Land Registry records. Did Keith Vaz or any of his fellow MPs insist on an enquiry into the loss of data belonging to the rest of us or do they just care about security if it might possibly involve Labour MPs?

September 7th, 2010 8:07pm Report this commentSeems that the unhealthy New Labour/Plod strong arm state alliance survived the Election. The coalition really need to get on and purge the CPS and ACPO or there will be more of this nonsense. I'm not holding my breath though - the coalition have already taken a couple of lurching steps towards nannyism and the Tory pre-election pledges to dismantle New Labour's Stasi State apparatus appear to have been quickly forgotten.
As for Vaz huffing and puffing indignantly. Maggie has it. What an oily bastard he is.

September 7th, 2010 8:48pm Report this commentMr Blackburn, Thank you for giving me one statement from Mr Yates. However how does not interviewing one person make the investigation inept? How crucial was Neville?
I think you are being influenced by the Labour Party.
There is no evidence in this case- end of story believe me. Coulson will still be in his job, sadly, in a year's time. I am sure he will remember your part in all this, don't you?

September 7th, 2010 8:51pm Report this commentI really hope Coulson is safe because this has gone way beyond 'phone-tapping', this is pure nasty, vicious, malice and an opportunity for various warring factions with their own agendas - all of it worked out over the summer of course.
A classic was Andrew Neil on BBC yesterday being given a 'free hit' on Coulson, NWT and David Cameron's 'judgement'.
David Cameron would be mad to give in to this pressure until it is proven 'beyond doubt' that Andy Coulson was involved in this. He will rue the day if he does because who will be next on Labour's list?

September 8th, 2010 10:32am Report this commentThat a man already publicly tainted with at best mismanagement of his own newspaper should be employed in a top Government job speaks volumes.
Whatever further investigations reveal, Coulson should not have been appointed, this was at best an error of judgement by David Cameron. I doubt that previous Conservative PMs would have made one such as this.

September 8th, 2010 11:18am Report this commentIan Stewart,
Did you ever complain about the well-documented ex-pornographer with mental health problems who did the same job at No.10 for Tony Blair? Or express your disgust that men who dreamt up the well-documented obscene false rumours about Conservative politicians should still retain their jobs as MPs?
Coulson is a paragon of virtue by comparison.

September 8th, 2010 4:49pm Report this commentUntil it is 'proven' beyond doubt that Coulson knew about the hacking?? Is this the domain of the truly dim and vacous?? Of course he knew about the hacking, everybody knows he knew about the hacking - what everybody doesnt know is how widespread it was/is. Coulson is a dead-man walking. I know Shameron is a bit slow on the uptake, but even he realises that this will never go away, not totally. So in about 6 months time, Coulson will move on - but disguised as something far less damining.
