Labour get the inquiry they wanted
Peter Hoskin 2:15pm
To these eyes, this afternoon's phone hacking debate was a surprisingly sedate affair.
Chris Bryant – proposing a motion to have an inquiry conducted by the Standards and Privileges committee into the News of the World's actions – seemed to go out his way to depoliticise
the argument, and other Labour MPs followed his lead. And so there was relatively little mention of Andy Coulson, with the emphasis instead on the wrongs that might have been done to the House by
the police and the media more generally. It was, then, little surprise that Bryant's motion was passed unanimously.
There were some flashes of controversy and acid, though. Bryant himself went quite hard on the police, claiming that they had not fulfilled their "duty of care". Tom Watson quivered that Rupert Murdoch should be hauled before the Standards and Privileges committee. Jack Dromey gave us a dose of innuendo about No.10 and Watergate. And then there was Simon Hughes – a victim of phone hacking – calling not just for an inquiry into the NotW allegations, but for a commission into the media as a whole. "There is a whole sea of illegal and undesirable activity here," he averred, "we need to be robust about it." Although he didn't really say anything which could be taken as a specific attack on Coulson, you wonder whether this robustness will translate into an anti-Downing Street positon.
In any case, whatever was said today, however much they restrained themselves from blatant tribalism, Labour have got what they wanted. The story rumbles on.

He has a wonderful gift of dressing up deeply tribal cynicism into evangelical piety.
The Beeb must be salivating over this story.

Dromey and Watergate!! Shows what an intellect Harman is married to! Still we know who wears the pants in that partnership!
I cannot recall this prune speaking up against anyone in Number 10 and peerages when he was Treasurer of the Labour Party! What a man of straw he is!
Coulson could, though, grab the moral high ground and stand down whilst this issue is being 'investigated'.
The News of the World will be on Red Alert now for any Labour MP acting dishonourably!!
Interesting Times.
PS. Does this mean Fraser Nelson will be investigated?

This just shows that most of our MP's are an utter bunch of self serving f'ers, with very little care or consideration for our country.

September 9th, 2010 4:00pm Report this commentWith the country in the middle of a major financial crisis, brought about by a combination of politicians and inept bankers, has parliament really got nothing better to do than hold an enquiry into whether some of their mobile phones have been tapped? In any case they should also concern themselves with whether their land lines have been tapped, I'm told that is much easier to do.
Many of our MPs possess a vastly inflated view of their own importance.

Self serving is too far a word removed, I don't like Murdoch but I hope he hits Labour with both barrels and the Beeb.

"This just shows that most of our MP's are an utter bunch of self serving f'ers, with very little care or consideration for our country."
How can that be so, when they were all carefully pre-selected and selected as official candidates for their parties, without which recommendation to the voters none of them would ever have been elected?
It might be concluded, therefore, that each of the political parties themselves must be controlled by an utter bunch of self serving f'ers, with very little care or consideration for our country, but how could that possibly be true?
After all, the leaders of two of those parties, plus clutches of other party oligarchs, are now ministers in Her Majesty's Government, and surely it can't be the case that we've allowed an utter bunch of self serving f'ers, with very little care or consideration for our country, to rise to such elevated positions?

September 9th, 2010 5:39pm Report this commentAt the root of this drive by the BBC and the Guardian is there intense jealousy of Richard Murdoch. They see the power he has and they want to do the same, why should this oik from down under influence and control British life, thats their job ! Especially as he is rich and in their world only they are supposed to have big wage packets. His dislike of their marxist philosophy doesn't help either.

Going by the interview with Kay Burley on Sky news,Chris Bryant attacked Kay for suggesting such a thing, calling her 'a bit dim',and Adam.
This is no longer just about Coulson,Labour see a chance to reel in the freedoms they enjoyed whilst in government.
The story will become, over the next few weeks/months.....the newspapers themselves.
Will they take this lying down?
Labour bent over backwards to stop the expenses coming to light on privacy stuff, without the newspaper,we would NEVER have found out what the troughing dogs were doing.
If illegal practices are used,procecute...
Which is what happened at the NoTW.
So you see Charles,Coulson is no longer the story for the likes of Chris Bryant, that story was getting nowhere.
Oh no Bryant has bigger fish to fry...the newspapers.

September 9th, 2010 7:08pm Report this commentA complete waste of Common's time, but nothing new in that. Nor is there anything new in the allegations - and that is all they are - in the New York Times. If the Labour Party are saying Andy Coulson knew of phone tapping and sanctioned it then they should bloody well prove it - NOW.
If there is to be an investigation then let it be wider. Lets see what the Mirror, Guardian, Observer and the BBC get up too also. That would be fun.

You do not seem to be understanding the issue.
No telephone calls have been recorded. All some NOTW reporters did was what anyone could do - they rang a number and when it went to answer-phone they accesses the code to listen to the messages. 0000 unless you change it.
Its not certain that this is breaking the law - what law?
