Should the flag of St George fly over Downing Street?

James Forsyth 6:13pm

I must admit to mixed feelings at the news that Number Ten will fly the flag of St George tomorrow. On the one hand, it’ll be an impressive sight and compared to the dog’s dinner of devolution is hardly likely to tear at the constitutional fabric. On the other, Downing Street is the home of the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and so the only flag that should fly over it is the Union flag.

We should be grateful that Gorgon isn't flying the Scottish flag on the day instead, as a nod to balance and inclusiveness. Could be worse though, he might think it's a good idea to fly the flag of the European Union -give him time...

Given that this Prime Minister and his predecessor have done more to undermine England than any other that I can recall, and also that he personally is Scotch, I think we can see it for what it is: blatant pandering to the country that has 85% or more of the seats in Parliament, and which will reject him and his disastrous party yet again next week.

Patriotism - the last refuge of Gordon Brown.

If he were really pandering to the English he'd pack his frugal belongings and head north, where his constituents were the last known people to appreciate his 'talents'. A better term might be rank hypocrisy.

Yet more nauseating attempts to grab a headline from the master of 'tomorrow's headline' politics. It was bad enough exploiting the Cross of St George and the Union flag in Labour's last party political. If the Tories had done that Labour would have been accused them of being dangerous right wing nationalists. Of course the Tories wouldn't dare do it. (BTW v. good satire from Tamsin Lightwater on this subject).

It probably is not long until that flag flies over all England’s public buildings thanks to the devolutionary Dog’s dinner Euro Regionalisation brought us.

I don't think the Red Cross should be flying at number ten tomorrow, more like it should be painted on the door, and avoided like the black plague, except of course for Labour Minister's, who can wave their white handkerchiefs in surrender to Gordon Brown through the letter box.

Master of tomorrow's headline, eh, Oscar? Dare I suggest instead, follower of yesterday's?

James Forsyth is right. Only the Union flag is appropriate at No. 10 Downing Street. The English flag should fly over the future English parliament (it's coming).

Who cares? It's not going to save Gordon, nor the Union - thank God.

Interesting. Will he dare to fly the saltire on St Andrews day?

He could fly his own underpants for all I care.

Wouldn't make any difference to what I think of him.

The sooner he's gone...

It's bad enough when the flag is been used by the repugnant BNP, but I think the English flag being endorsed by that most un-English of organs, the British State, equally depressing.

Why not? Seeing it is St Georges day! Isn't it about time England keep a day to remind us, one and all, that we have a country to be proud of. It should mean marching through the streets with the flag held high. All streets . . . no go streets and all.

NAH! – RUBBISH! - CAN’T BE TRUE!

The PC and Thought Police would be round to No 10 in a flash ‘advising’ the occupant not to offend the feelings of foreign people, - with the prospect of ‘remedial’ action if it – either flag - stayed up.

After May the 1st It will be The BNP Flag flying on most of the Council Buildings!!!! Labour, Tories and the rest of the shower have made this country a dumping ground for undesirables from the rest of the world! It is time to make this country Great Britain in order to get our Ex Pats back on to the land they once were proud of!

Come on British people! Vote for the BNP on May the 1st! Help bring back your friends to this country they once loved! Being British is not a crime!

I am proud to be a BNP member! and I am proud to be British too!

It should NOT be flying over Downing Street. That is the base of the BRITISH Prime Minister. And were the Scottish, Irish and Welsh flags up at Downing Street on their appropriate days???
This is Brown all over...throw a sop to the injured party (here English nationalists) and with a great clunking fist get it so wrong. All style, not substance.
Everyday comes another twist in the frantic plot of 'Chaos under Gordon'. If it wasn't real life, it would be funny.

Salieri - good point.

Hmmmm, a red cross flying over Downing Street. Are we to assume that the occupant is requesting medical attention? Get the men in white coats!!!

salieri

April 23rd, 2008 2:37pm

Surely, in order not to upset the sensibilities of our minorities (or Jack Straw) the flag should be the Red Crescent?
