Palin versus Romney
David Blackburn 3:30pm
The GOP is ambling towards the start of the 2012 nominations race. Two probable
candidates are busy pitching their media tents. Sarah Palin is on a coast to coast tour, flogging her latest book; she has also been cheering on her daughter on Dancing with the Stars and she
recently gutted a halibut on her Alaskan reality TV show. It’s all action and personality from the Mamma Grissly. By contrast, the cerebral Mitt Romney has agreed to appear on…Jay
Leno’s Tonight Show.
Leno makes Parky look almost vital. As one Democrat strategist observed: “On the hipness scale, this is far from Bristol Palin on ‘Dancing with the Stars.’ It’s more like Richard Nixon on ‘Laugh In’.” The Boston Herald asks what Romney can do to counter Sarah Palin’s celebrity. 'Nothing' seems to be the general consensus. But Romney can’t be forgotten amid the Palin furore; so, chatting about cars and chicks with Leno it is.
Romney’s supporters are convinced that his qualities will effervesce as the race turns from celebrity to policy, while this may be the high tide for Palin. Could Palin match Romney’s grasp of the complex economic issues that will determine the election? Not on her sweet life. Romney plans to fight star power with brain power. Whether Romney's brain will prevail is another matter.

November 30th, 2010 3:49pm Report this commentWell, you've picked the correct 2 protagonists, Mr. Blackburn. But I wouldn't go so far as to call an unprincipled, careerist political hack "brainy". Palin will undoubtedly be a kingmaker in this coming election, and she won't be placing a crown on this particular head, you may depend.

November 30th, 2010 3:59pm Report this commentAnd I doubt Romney is responding to Palin here, he's just doing what's done. Obama appearing on The View and eschewing press conferences with the chattering class, for example. Might as well plug into the infotainment industry at places of your own choosing, rather than allow the media sanhedrin to presume prepotency. It's the American way.
And it's "mama grizzly", in reference to Ursus arctos horribilis. Palin chose her icon well. Those who cross her will be fated horribly, I suspect.

November 30th, 2010 4:15pm Report this commentThat's right, Anna WK1, keep up the ad hominem attacks, so that you can ignore the policy issues. Perhaps you're even more of a bird brain than Palin?
Palin is no less knowledgeable about foreign affairs than Clinton or Obama; the difference is they don't suffer sexist attacks. If you read the whole of Palin's comments on Korea, rather than the bit spoon-fed to you by equally lazy hacks, you'd see that she clearly knows the difference between the north and the south.
Palin might not be the best flag bearer for millions of disenfranchised Americans but she is a whole lot better than careerist suits like Obama and Romney, who offer nothing but the status quo in the way politics is conducted whilst the decline in American living standards continues unabated.

You are hurling ad hominem attacks at me, old boy or gal. Perhaps the fact that I am responding to you is a sign that I am indeed a bird brain . I am first and foremost a Republican, and would never even consider supporting such people as Clinton or Obama. I respect Palin, and because I think she is pretty is hardly a sexist remark. Sorry if you are of the politically correct persuasion, in which case whatever one says can be thrown back with accusations of various 'sins'.

The people who are denigrating the former Governor of the largest state in the Union are the same ones who cheered former Chicago "community organiser" and Tamany Hall scrote who had not a shred of executive experience anywhere, ever, Barak Obama. And whose campaign was organised by the FBI's former No 1 Most Wanted (for terrorism) "Weatherman" William Ayres. Obama's campaign for the presidency was kicked off in the home of Ayres and his former terrorist wife Bernadette Dohrn. Strange that the MSM made little of this - so little, in fact, that they didn't even mention it. Yet Sarah Palin, who will have a Secretary of State when she is President - she won't be conducting foreign policy herself - makes one slip of the lip and they're all over her like a swarm of locusts.

November 30th, 2010 6:42pm Report this commentDimoto - Yes indeed, quite an understatement that George W Bush was well-connected in the Eastern establishment, given that his father was President of the United States, and before that, the head of the CIA. And his grandfather was a Massachusetts senator.
Alaska, though, is an important state for the same reason that Texas is an important state. Oil. You fail to mention that Palin was personally involved in the development of the historic pipeline deal between Alaska and Alberta. She didn't just sign the bill. She was involved in it all the way along.
What was Obama ever involved in other than Tamany Hall and the "communities" whose votes he was "organising"? I don't know if he was ever involved in the graveyard community ... you know, where Chicago pols got the deceased to turn out and vote for the incumbent mayor?

November 30th, 2010 6:42pm Report this commentThere is very little chance Obama can win reelection in 2012. That would require 2 years of extremely competent administration and politicking, skill sets that he just does not possess. That's why folks are coming out of the woodwork to run now, rather than simply marshaling support for 2016. They sense blood in the water, and more of it daily.
And the Left's worst nightmare would be a Palin/Obama matchup. Bad enough that their progressive hero is about to get rejected and thrashed, but if it's the Alaskan fishwife doing the thrashing, their heads will explode.

If something doesn't work, change and fix it. In his world if you don't solve problems you get fired and lots of people lose lots of money. There is very little tolerance for failure. Palin is simply a female GOP version of Obama. Heavy on ideology, great popular appeal with little to no real experience in complex problem solving. Mayor of Wasila? Wow... Governor for two years? Big wow... Spare me the popular ideologues.

November 30th, 2010 9:57pm Report this commentRomney is definitely running. Is Palin? Likely she is not running. Everything that she has done to date is consistent with achieving celebrity and earning a fortune (both in an honorable manner) but much is not consistent with running for President. Moreover, it is getting quite late for her to assemble a staff of Presidential campaign caliber and to start cultivating the party political connections necessary for the Presidential primaries. Conclusion? She does not and never has had any intention of running. However, she must keep the possibility alive publicly, at least through the end of her book sale campaign and through as many episodes as possible of her television show, in order to maximize revenues. Obama fervently wishes to have Palin as his Republican opponent, and all polls show that he is right to do so, but it will not happen.

.
You mean, he and his daddy's money and connections founded Bain Capital. Daddy's friends and money were always a great help to young Mitt. Unlike Palin for example, who did it on her own.
Mitt’s daddy was governor of my state here, Michigan. A solid man, before that he ran American Motors, back when real car guys existed and boot-strapped their way to the top. Then, JFK called him to Washington to serve. Mitt rode those coattails, but is a lefty squish, and proved that in Massachusetts as governor (RomneyCare = ObamaCare), and in running for the US Senate. His actions speak, and you can forget his empty words... on pretty much anything.
And then, he morphed into a “conservative”, and ran for President. What a larf. In the primary, he carpet bombed us here in Michigan with millions in campaign cash, proclaiming himself a “native son” of the state, but we knew better, especially as regards his lies about his history and actions here. He squeaked into a thin win (based upon the urban lefty vote), after all that cash spent, and was exposed as a charlatan in the following primaries. McCain is a lying, corrupt, self-entitled scoundrel, and if Mitt was even a hint of a conservative, he woulda walked all over him. We would have noticed if it was there to be noticed, but he is as I described him: an unprincipled, careerist political hack. I’d supplement that with nepotistic opportunist.
It’s delicious though, that McCain has left as residue Mitt’s tough, savvy, ebulliently-smiled and shapely assassin… La Palin. She bagged a few trophies this cycle, and there's one more coming.
I doubt she’ll be President, but she’ll decide who won’t be President, by mounting the furtive weasel’s carcass into a full body mount in her Fairbanks trophy room.
