Clegg will vote for fees hike
James Forsyth 5:30pm
The wait is over. We have just been told that Nick Clegg will definitely vote for the
coalition’s policy on tuition fees. Clegg announced this, according to his spokeswoman, at the meeting of the Lib Dem parliamentary party that is currently going on. He told the meeting that
to govern is to choose, and that the coalition had to chosen to invest in early years education rather than in scrapping fees.
Clegg’s spokesperson said that he had urged the party to ‘walk through the fire together’ but that he accepted and respected that not every Lib Dem MP would vote with him. We
will, apparently, be told this evening whether or not Lib Dem ministers and PPS will be able to defy the whip and retain their jobs.

December 7th, 2010 7:39pm Report this commentDear Charles - the notion that higher education will suffer is flawed.
Good universities will get better and poor universities will not charge the higher rate and may ell run their coursed over 2 years.
The fees only get paid beyond an income of £21k pa and are capped And its said that the poorest 25% will be better off. How does this square with your claim. And where does the money come from anyway.

Early years education is surely most important. However, the LibDems are surely going to spilt. It's inevitable isn't it?

The man is so arrogant, he thinks we are gonna forgive and forget in 4 years time. Well Mr Clegg, the public will never forget what a spineless weasel you truly are.

December 7th, 2010 10:09pm Report this commentI love watching the Conservatives trying to protect Nick. What they fail to realise is, when this all crumbles, Clegg is the type who will want to pull Dave down with him.
Methinks your attitudes will change somewhat. :)

December 8th, 2010 1:31am Report this commentWhilst I accept that there are harsh realities our country needs to face up to, there's a certain element that is emotive about the whole fees business. Clegg signed a very clear commitment, one that was publicised and netted him a large share of the student vote, irrespective of the realities of the position he finds himself in, a promise so public, broken so clearly, will not be easily overlooked.

December 8th, 2010 8:34am Report this commentSid, you actually HATE a man you have never met? He has killed nobody, nor caused anyone to be killed. You hate him because he spouses a policy about the funding of universities. I suppose you are the sort of person who HATES Lady Thatcher. Get a life, old son. And you can't have spineless weasels. You mean jellyfish perhaps. Clegg is the first leader of the Liberals since Lloyd George who wasn't/isn't a joke.
How often do we have to say it? Who introduced student fees? The Labour Government. Who increased them? The Labour Government. Who broke their promises on this? The Labour Government. But then you know this. Clegg-hating is the fury of Caliban seeing his own face in the mirror. Clegg shows you that your political 'beliefs' are childish. Join the Ice Cream party, folks. Nick Clegg is a fine, upstanding fellow.

Effng b’locks Clegg, so the country can print money to stop the banks going into debt, but cannot do the same for England’s next generation. You are so WRONG. You will fail at the next English election for sure. U R A C

Ironic that you should choose a comparison with Lloyd George a 'Prime Minister without a Party'. Clegg is definitely on course to become a Deputy PM without a Party.
