Fox's Sri Lanka visit 'postponed'
James Forsyth 7:46pm
Gary Gibbon has just reported that Liam Fox’s visit to Sri Lanka has been ‘postponed’. His private visit this year has been replaced by the promise of an official visit next year.
It was never really tenable that a Cabinet Minister could visit a foreign country to deliver a speech while claiming that the visit was private. William Hague has apparently now persuaded the Defence Secretary of this without damaging the relationship between the two men.
When Fox does go to Sri Lanka, it’ll be fascinating to see what he says. Friends of Fox say that he really does believe that the Sri Lankan government’s actions have been justified. But if Fox were too say that on an official visit, that would undoubtedly cause controversy back home.

The advocates of South Sudan referendum are going through hard time with the pro-Bashir Arab militia and goons.

December 16th, 2010 9:43pm Report this commentThese days anything that any Cabinet Minister says, whether at home or abroad, may "cause controversy" - but especially so when what he says consists of common sense.
This fear of "controversy" causes far too much hypocrisy and has caused the current panic among powerful people at the publication, by Wikileaks, of facts that have been merely passed on to it by others.
If Fox hails the defeat of the Tamil Tigers, it will, we should hope, be a sign that Truth need be less intimidated and have more courage to appear in public.

December 16th, 2010 10:31pm Report this commentThis man has no moral compass. The Sri Lankan government in April/May 2009 killed up to 30000 Tamils mostly civillans and many summarily executed.
We should be advocating bringing these people to the Hague on war crime charges rather than endorsing their regime.

December 16th, 2010 11:32pm Report this commentSeems to be a load of old bollocks here.
Tamil Tigers were a bunch of murderous separatist terrorists. The legitimate government supported by the great majority of peaceful citizens went to war against them. A fierce war and they won.
Taking a step back I seem to remember that we the allies in order to liberate France killed thousands of French citizens. The French thanked us for it.
To win the war we bombed Germany flat - I will not go into what the Russians did.
Ladies and gentlemen I am not perfect but I am not a bastard hypocrite. I see that the reward we (in the guise of the the Labour govt) get for keeping Kosovo independent was that its leader murders Serbs in order to harvest their organs. Perhaps you socialists can emote your happiness at what you did to the rest of us.

If he had rented a flat on his own he would have cost the taxpayer more.

January 11th, 2011 9:30am Report this commentIf what the Sri Lankan government did to defeat the Tamil Tigers was wrong, then what what the UK, USA & their allies did to defeat German Nazis & Japanese militarists was also wrong.
Why doesn't a Consevative government, the party of Churchill, want to admit that what the Sri Lankan government did was, overall & on balance, justified? The only answer that seems plausable is that it doesn't want to upset 300,000 people of Sri lankan Tamil origin now living in the UK. What a sad state Britain's foreign policy has now sunk to.
