Signs of progress in Iraq

12:40pm

Ken Pollack and Mike O’Hanlon—neither of whom could be called a neo-conservative, a Bush supporter, or a Republican—have a must read op-ed in the New York Times this morning on Iraq. Their view is that:

“We are finally getting somewhere in Iraq, at least in military terms. As two analysts who have harshly criticized the Bush administration’s miserable handling of Iraq, we were surprised by the gains we saw and the potential to produce not necessarily “victory” but a sustainable stability that both we and the Iraqis could live with.”
This is not to argue that everything is rosy in the Iraqi garden. As today’s Oxfam report illustrates there are still huge obstacles to be overcome. But there do seem to be enough signs of progress to justify continuing with the current, improved strategy into next year.

I was amazed to discover yesterday that Iraq actually has a national football team, and that it had actually won a tournament. How has that been managed given the generally reported state of the country? And apparently yesterday's celebrations amongst the populace included Sunni, Shia, and Kurd, with pictures reminiscent of any English city's celebrations when Rooney scores. So it would appear there is some reason for optimism.

To James T Kirk: ... yes, and this time the players weren't even tortured!
