Finish that thought
Fraser Nelson 4:12pm“I really want the Conservatives to win the next election because…”
A few CoffeeHousers have offered some endings to the above sentence, and I’d like to offer the bribe of a bottle of champagne for the best entry. One rule (sorry, Tiberius) it can’t just be “because Brown is a villain” etc - it has to be a way in which the Tories would change Britain for the better: a reason to look forward to Cameron arriving, not just to Brown departing.
So far, Oz says the Tories will be cheaper and “do it for 99p against Labour's pound” – that’s the idea, but not quite an agenda to set the heather alight, as we say in the Highlands. There must be something more inspirational (Labour had minimum wage, smaller class sizes etc– something for activists to hold on to, even if each pledge was deeply suspect). So if anyone from the newly-launched pro-Cameroon Platform 10 is reading, feel free to enter! (And yes, Og, all entries to my original post count. You may yet win!)

July 30th, 2007 4:39pmWell I did try later to come over to the positive values side of the x-axis, Fraser, but perhaps subliminally you're one of the 41%?!

July 30th, 2007 4:53pmFraser, I am Og, not Oz. And being Og, I too know all about heather, and the lighting thereof. I will be up to my oxters in it on Monday 13 August, if I'm saved.

July 30th, 2007 5:31pmOg, I spotted my mistake and corrected. Everyone is allowed one career mistake. And Tiberius, the rule is you've got to say something positive about the Conservatives.... Come on, guys, this is a conservative website. We can do it... can't we?

July 30th, 2007 6:00pmI really want the Conservatives to win the next election because . . . . there’s a faint hope that sooner or later they may have an authentic leader able to discern and courageously articulate traditional British values of fairness, independence of spirit, and freedom.

July 30th, 2007 6:17pmthey understand that businesses creates jobs, not government; they understand families know best how to spend their hard earned money not the state; they understand the nation state still has a role, do not subscribe to a European superstate and would offer the people of this country a referendum on any change to that situation; they understand that you succeed in life becaue of what you know not who you know; because they understand power should be concentrated in the hands of the many and not the few and because only a Conservative Government would put in place policies to make these beliefs a reality.

July 30th, 2007 6:57pm.... because beneath the heavy camouflage, there lies within our party the intellect to solve the problems stored up by a decade of statism; behind the disguise, there lies the courage to reform the departments of state with their insatiable greed and groaning payrolls; despite bogus representation to the contrary, there lies the heart to do so in a way that protects the weak whilst inspiring the great majority; and, clear for all to see, the instinct to preserve the ancient freedoms and liberties of this great nation, to champion Britain and its people.

July 30th, 2007 8:55pm...because the Conservatives have the right answers to tackling "social responsibility" which is something you see a lot of in the Highlands and other smaller more widely scattered communities, but sadly seems to be lacking in many urban area's these days.
BenS
July 30th, 2007 9:49pm...because the Conservatives will reduce the size of the State. 'Social responsibility' is politically expedient window dressing to disguise this ambition, since it unambiguously rolls back the State and replaces it with something rather vague and indefinable, which will probably never actually materialise. Thus the Tories will be able to achieve the Holy Grail of right-wing politics without committing electoral suicide.

July 30th, 2007 9:59pm...although they are undeniably adrift at the moment, DC must and one hopes will come to realise that it is his task and duty to oppose and attack the government - that is what they are there for. Less time and effort spent on vanity projects e.g iceberg licking, hoodie hugging, Africa jaunting, will enable him and his team to master all the detail necessary for this task - which is ongoing and unrelenting. Hard work against a formidable opponent it may be, but it cannot be ducked. He must also be seen to be standing for something (anything!). The Tories must hammer away at policy. This might and should include; securing our borders, defining and securing the British 'way of life' ( a good start would be to require anyone who seeks to come and live here to speak English), policing the streets on foot, curbing State power and interference in...everything. Oh,and making the trains run on time.

July 30th, 2007 10:40pmI really want the Conservatives to win the next election because apart from my wife having bigger breasts and increasing my chances of owning a BMW M3. July 30th, 2007 10:48pmbecause.. it costs a bleedin' fortune just existing in this wretched country, I would like to think the tories would spend that money a bit more responsibly than labour and make the country a bit less wretched as well..

July 31st, 2007 4:06amMy perspective is admittedly different from most of the readers - I'm an American right-winger who came of age in the Thatcher-Reagan era. I also happen to be (I guess) one of the few Americans who knew who Tony Blair was when he took power, and as such never, ever warmed to him. I worry that the Tories are playing too many anti-American cards needlessly. Michael Howard became an absolute pariah that way. Cameron has actually tried to avoid Howard's pitfalls, but the "High Toryism" label appears stuck, and American media (from the New York Times to Fox News) has fallen for it, too. So therefore . . . I really want the Conservatives to win the next election because . . . it may be the only way the UK Conservatives and the Americans can punt the media distorters and remind each other how much they have in common.

July 31st, 2007 4:56amI really want the Conservatives to win the next election because ... it's time to bring back the Empire, none of this Nanny state stuff ... we need good Head Master Government. We in Australia have wall to wall state labor governments and its a dissaster waiting for more than a train to wreck.

July 31st, 2007 8:55amHow about: "I really want the Conservatives to win the next election because .... people really deserve the leaders they get!" "I really want the Conservatives to win the next election because ... the country deserves to have him, and he deserves to win!" I really want the Conservatives to win the next election because ... it is time for their turn again to be in office!" I really want the Conservatives to win the next election because ... it is now time for the other lot of cowards and incompetents to be in charge!" I really want the Conservatives to win the next election because ... a Conservative leader that cannot even bring himself to promise lower taxes DESERVES to be in power!"

July 31st, 2007 9:22amBecause...the Conservative party still embraces core conservative (with small 'c') values such as collective responsibility, individual freedoms, tolerance of others and a minimum of government. It is basically honest, educated and principled and acknowledges the debt it owes to the history, culture and traditions of this country that can blend with its innovation and commitment to restore its status as a country once again admired for its achievements rather than its sanctuary.

July 31st, 2007 10:06amI find it deeply depressing how many of these posts seem to follow the structure, because they're better than Labour. Or just point out the weaknesses of the Labour party. I can't imagine us saying such things when Thatcher was in. What the Tories are really lacking - and what, I think, we've always lacked with the exception of the Thatcher years - is any strong ideology. We're back to the days of Heath, desperate for power and desperate to do what the country wants. What the country wants is another Thatcher who they can defer too while s/he makes the country better with the power of markets. I can't see Dave doing that, can you? Like or loathe Gordon, the ordinary punter knows there is some joined up thinking going on behind his moves. Sadly, the same is not true of the 'new' Conservatives.
Tiberius
July 31st, 2007 11:56amWell, if Fraser has indeed made a point with this question, that we are reduced to asking Pythonesque, "what has New Labour ever done for us...", perhaps he ought to copy Dave in on it. But let's not dismiss the school of thought that policy is some way down the list of things that attracts people to vote for you.

July 31st, 2007 3:29pm...I believe they are the natural party of good governance. The New Labour machine is a proto-communist hovel fronted by a Graecian portico, and a lie is no way to govern a country. For instance, everybody knows that the underpinnings of Brown's Economic Miracle lie in the Conservative spending plans adopted by the new government in 1997...

August 1st, 2007 11:59amI really want the Conservatives to win the next election because I want a government that is fair: - fair to pensioners, paying the compensation for bankrupt schemes that the Ombudsman said should be paid; - fair to the English, recognizing that English votes on English issues is the only honest way; - fair on Europe, keeping a promise to let the people vote on the treaty; - fair to the taxpayer, cutting out multi-billion pound consultants’ boondoggles like ID cards and the NHS IT scheme; - fair to the low-paid: I am the only person who thinks it absurd that someone on minimum wage pays income tax? Come on George, that’s one tax cut you should promise. (How to pay? See previous item) - fair to local councils, by not using them as an agent of central government by putting ever more “obligations” on them, and allowing them to be local government for local people. - fair to schoolchildren, by supporting teachers and cutting out bureaucracy - fair to our troops, by giving them adequate equipment to do what we ask, and not asking too much Be fair. Vote Conservative

August 1st, 2007 4:44pm....Because for all the media kerfuffle about the Conservative's being all spin and no substance (with Gordo temporarily riding high, the feral beast need someone to sink their teeth into after all!), there is some serious thinking going on within the Conservative Party. I for one, find it exciting that for the first time in at least a generation the Conservative Party has the courage and the genuine passion to deal with Britain's societal problems. Broon Bounce.....Dead Cat Bounce more like!
