Could Warsi’s next job be High Commissioner to Pakistan?

James Forsyth 4:06pm

Sayeeda Warsi’s upbraiding of Pakistan for not living up to Jinnah’s ideals is another sign of how the government believes Baroness Warsi to be uniquely able to speak to Britain’s most difficult ‘ally’. David Cameron and his circle were thoroughly impressed by how Warsi managed to cool tempers in Islamabad following the Prime Minister’s criticism of Pakistan, in of all places India, for facing both ways in the war on terror and have been using her since to speak to the country’s leadership.

Given that the Tory high command does not believe Warsi to be suited to being an election-campaign party chairman or to running a department, this raises the intriguing prospect that they might instead appoint her as Britian’s next high commissioner to Pakistan. One former colleague, who often clashed with her, thinks that this would be her ideal job. The argument goes that with an effective Foreign Office number two, Warsi could get far more out of the Pakistani government than a regular diplomat could.

I know Pakistan can be bad, but ....

Use drones, SAS, missiles, helicopters for sure, even nukes - but Warsi is a disproportionate and irresponsible response.

Bad idea. If she's not suitable for the other jobs, why is she suitable for this with conflicted interests built in?

Well it's one way to get rid of her, I suppose.

Only a matter of time before she shares Benazir Bhutto's and Shahbaz Bhatti's fate then. With her eventual killer's path to trial being showered in rose petals from members of the country's lawyers' association. (as was the case with Bhatti's assassin)

I'm not being flippant, Warsi is a Muslim, so any slight she delivers will have the blasphemous odour of apostasy about it, far worse than the simple ignorance of the kuffar.

Charles Martel ... an excellent, well-thought-out post, sir!

BTW, did we ever learn what the president of the Tory Party was doing on an official visit to Pakistan with a government car, driver and taxpayer paid-for accommodation? Did we find out what service she was performing that the British High Comm could not perform better, with more diplomatic experience and a better grasp of economics than the sulky fatty pictured here?

And what does that Cameronesque meaning-free sign in the photo above - "Together National Interest" actually ... uh ... mean? How much did it cost to "brainstorm" and execute? Who paid for it?

James Forsythe writes: "One former colleague, who often clashed with her, thinks that this would be her ideal job."

Why should she have any job? Who the hell is she that the government has to find a job for her? Her job should be cleaning out her desk.

“The argument goes that with an effective Foreign Office number two, Warsi could get far more out of the Pakistani government than a regular diplomat could.”

He or she would need to be good; so good in fact that they would be far better as the number one, because she will be useless.

This silly woman has only one thing going for her, she is a Muslim, and while the powers that be want to ignore one of the larger elephants in the room, she will always have a job with this government.

The real problem is that the room now has a couple of dozen elephants and they obscure all of the available light.

Its up to the British govt if they send her. What I will say is the killer of Bhatti were never found so its not possible for them to be showered with petals.as for the killing of Salman Taseer, the only lawyers celebrating were those belonging to the opposition party.twisted yes but pakistani politics is twisted .As for the killing of benazir, that was a huge event in pakistan ,for 3 days the entire country was taken over by mourners of benazir not even the police dared to challenge the mourners so get your facts right. Pakistan is going through problems thanks to NATO's mistakes in Afghanistan and the British and American governments forcing the last dictator of pakistan to sign a political amnesty forgiving 80 billion pounds of corruption. the NRO.If america had not forced the musheraff to sign NRO then the current failed politicians would not be in pakistan, instead we would have competent leadership. The taliban in pakistan are not popular, but people join them because of the widespread anti americanism not because the taliban offer some amazing version of Islam which attracts everyone

Sovres' assertion is sick.

Verity seems more confused than usual. Warsi is a Co-Chairman of the conservative party.
Also my dear she is Minister without Portfolio in the Cabinet. She is a member of the govt and thus she does tend to go to places on govt business. Although not necessarily as a 'permanent representative'.

Come on Ali; that might have a smidgen, a tiny bit of truth to it, but to claim that Pakistan has problems just because of the above, is to deny obvious truths.

Pakistan’s neighbour India welcomed self government and home rule at the same time and on the same terms as Pakistan, they have built the world’s largest thriving democracy where all faiths are welcome and furthermore are all treated equally, the Indian people are admired and respected throughout the world and god willing, will take their place at the top table of the worlds leading countries in the not too distant future.

What has Pakistan and the Pakistanis done to boast about?

have no knowledge of the Baroness except for what I’ve seen of her once on the BBC’s QT, she didn’t perform badly at all considering, the post may indeed suit her, and us, she knows the culture, speaks the tongue, is good at debating, appears hardy under pressure, we could do worse than letting her have a go.

I suppose her big problem to you lot is a)she's a woman and b)she's muslim....'fess up, you want to restore the ruke of chaps....

Ali, the Pakistan area and militant Islam have been a problem for several hundred years - long before the Americans even existed as a country themselves.

Your comment about how the country would be fine if only it wasn't for the pesky Americans illustrates exactly what is wrong with the country. It blames other people for its problems instead of taking ownership for them. As long as it persists with that losers' mentality, it will remain basket case or corruption, inequity and violence.

Yes, this ‘bias’ from us must be very alarming, callingallcomets.

It's a thing called 'free speech' btw. And this phenomenon is something that is constantly admonished by Warsi, the liberal Left and the UK race relations industry.

Personally, my comments above were to bring ‘to the mix’ my opinion that Warsi is just one in a long line of unique personalities that are where they are purely due to their race, religion or sexual orientation.

Each side, the establishment & the specific minority person in question will manipulate each other to further themselves shamlessly.

Treveor Phillips has done this- and the people who orchestrated things like the Neathergate revelations (i don’t think you’ll have current affairs knowledge to understand what that is, callingallcomets – please Google it if so) all used the work of Trevor Phillips to hasten their progress.

Please read this;

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-12237958

“A comprehensive-school-educated Asian woman, who speaks with a Yorkshire accent, she has risen rapidly.... Educated at Leeds University, Baroness Warsi describes herself as a "Northern, working-class roots, urban, working mum".

Ok, here Baroness Warsi, the same Northern, working-class roots, urban, working mum addressing the Muslim community in Oldham;
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VPveOHmwsWg
Ok, the use of the word ‘Inshalla’ is fair enough- but the overall jist of the thing is ‘wikileaks’ (i think)..... the word ‘Jewish community’ and ‘racism’ is in there, 4.15minutes in.

As an opinion, i do not think she is a Northern, working class roots, urban, working mum in the sense that she is trying to portray.... because this image is for the non-Muslim (and white working class community especially) only. She is saying to her community, in Urdu/Punjabi things that would damage the reputation of the Conservatives primarily- but also incense the white working communities surrounded by these major urban Islamic centres into realising that really, the wools being pulled over their eyes in a callous manner.

Baroness Warsi, i suspect will see a prospective posting to Pakistan (in other people’s eyes, a huge opportunity) as a disaster for her own personal advancement because that is all she’s in it for.
