Purnell: the next Labour leader?
Peter Hoskin 10:42am
Just a follow-up to Fraser's post of yesterday. His article on why James Purnell could be the man to rescue Labour from their current scrape is now on the website. You can access it here. And remember to have your say in the comments section - are there any CoffeeHousers who rate the artfully-sideburned one?!

May 15th, 2008 11:11amJudging by his performance on Questiontime least Thursday ( probably still available on I player)he is a lightweight of the first order with no grasp of history . If being smiley and able to provide glib answers is the measure they are going to apply for the hopefully soon to be available post then he's your man. Just a thought but could he provide the Dream Ticket with him and Hazel Blears?

May 15th, 2008 11:33amThe Labour Party if they want to win or even just lose with their dignity intact have only one option - Tony Blair.
I am sure they can find an MP to 'retire' his seat to get him back into parliament.
And remember, with Brown now a busted flush and consigned to the backbenches, Blair will be able to bring in the reforms that the public services badly need.
Also, if we do have to go to war with Iran do you want a Brown or Purnell in power. I don't think so.

May 15th, 2008 11:54amPeter, what is it you and Fraser? - has James Purnell been buying you drinks or something? Fraser was generally derided when he posted this idea previously. Balls and Miliband will bury Purnell if he so much as even appears to be positioning himself for a tip at the Big Job - and that is before Ken Livingstone reappears on Labour's back benches via being parachuted into a safe London seat and begins to unite the left with his own campaign for the leadership. Sorry Peter, but I suggest you and Fraser take more water with the Scotch next time you go drinking with young 'Jamie'...

May 15th, 2008 12:46pmNot me. Reminds me of the sort of reptiles holding "Head of" posts throughout corporate Britain.
Those with responsibility for decisions affecting the country need wisdom, experience, breadth of view and reason in their toolkits. Ambitious, opinionated, arrogant, self-serving oikism is not enough - as the last 11 years demonstrate.

May 15th, 2008 1:05pmThe King Prawn Solution - 'The Return of the King?' - is undeniably logical but nevertheless an appalling prospect. The very thought of it has quite put me off my lunch.

May 15th, 2008 6:18pmHas someone at the Speccie got a crush on this non-entity? He is a typical empty suit: all think tanks and politics and absolutely no experience of the real world.
