Bernard Hogan-Howe named as new Met commissioner

David Blackburn 5:03pm

Theresa May has named Bernard Hogan-Howe as the new Metropolitan Police Commissioner. Hogan-Howe was the early front-runner and a finalist for the role last time round. He is apparently highly respected within the police force and has been a successful chief constable in Merseyside.

His appointment has come earlier than was expected: the talk at the end of July was of completing the process later in the autumn. This suggests that the government is keen to repair the damage to its relationship with the Met and the reputation of the police caused by the phone hacking scandal and the riots. This will be essential if the coalition is to deliver its ambitious police reforms. Having shied away from appointing a complete outsider like Bill Bratton, the government plainly feels it has got the right man in Hogan-Howe; Boris Johnson is certainly enthsed, calling Hogan-Howe a "clear winner".

Should not it be the Met who is anxious to repair its relationship with the govt??

In what way have the govt anything to apologise for?

Excellent choice - a real policeman at last.

Orde can now return to playing politics with his ACPO pals.

I see other comments have been made, but im very pleased Orde doesnt get it: his snooty independent interview did him no favours

Thank goodness it wasn't the arrogant macho man, Orde, who was Labour's choice I suspect given he is 'left-wing' and the Guardian are coming out saying "he was robbed."

" ...he has been a successful chief Constable in Merseyside."

If he was that good, why are drugs overlords running the toby?

Probably because, as with all CC's and Commissioners he is dependant on who is working for him, not t'other way around.

With Boris's imprimatur he'll be fine. The Albino kiss of death!

I wish him good fortune in his post, but I think elected chiefs, accountable directly to the voters, is best.

What a stupid comment; but then it does at least show how vacant and vacuous your mind must be.

I guess if he hadn't been keeping his todger well in check he would have had the whistle blown (oh dear - sri) on him by now - the competition was fierce and the spies have been busy. No flies on him. Looks like a zipper man to me.

But is he really really untainted by NooLieBOre and Bliarist thinking?

If not away with him now!

But given the obesession of the H2B with Bliar, perhaps he will last a little while.

The best man for the job. Which is no doubt what was said about Stephenson and all the others before him! I see Hogan-Howe has already vowed to 'tackle criminals'. Impressed we are!

I wish you folks would rid yourselves that the Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis has anything to do with policing. By the time they get to that rank they are damaged beyond repair. They are all politicians - not police officers. As for this one - take a look at his Wiki entry. He's a Bramshill Butterfly. When did he have time to learn the art of policing? Let's hope that this butterfly has a sting in his tail. Good luck commissioner. You'll need it. And what is your name? Is it Hogan or Howe?

As I've said before, I have lived in a jurisdiction in the great state of Texas where they have elected police chiefs, and the police service is second to none.

The chief likes being in the police force and he likes being the chief. He knows that the way to get re-elected is to do as the voters wish and to give them results.

Response times are RAPID. If you get stopped by a cop on the freeway for driving too fast, he will be very courteous to you. Even if your infraction was bad enough to get a ticket.

If you have a complaint, you can call the police and your complaint will be genuinely investigated and you will be informed of the result.

Most of all, they don't tippy toe around criminals. The voters want criminals locked up or shot. And that's what happens. And if there's a criminal trying to get into your house, they remind you that if you shoot him, you should remember that both his feet should be over the threshhold before you call them.

What's not to like about elected chiefs? It's a big mistake not to have them in Britain.

The liberal left Guardian/BBC will be upset that Orde did not get the job and will start undermining Hogan-Howe at the first oportunity.
