Cameron stamps on the SpAds

James Forsyth 6:01pm

David Cameron summoned all Tory special advisers to Downing Street for a meeting this afternoon. He wanted, I understand, to warn them that too much of the coalition's internal workings were being briefed out to journalists. He made it clear that he wants an end to process stories appearing in the papers.

Downing Street has been infuriated by recent reports of tensions between Steve Hilton, Cameron’s senior adviser, and George Osborne and is keen to stamp on anything that keeps this — rather misleading — story going. There are also worries about the party being seen as divided again, a return to the old Tory wars stories of the 1990s.

Interestingly, Cameron said that he did not think that many leaks came from officials. This point is disputed by several Tory advisers. There is also irritation that the role of the Liberal Democrats, who are widely suspected of regularly briefing out stories of ‘Blue on Blue’ tensions, was not mentioned.

Cameron’s other main message was the importance of pressing the flesh. He stressed that backbenchers and the party needed to be kept happy. This is a welcome sign that the Prime Minister is placing a greater emphasis on party management.

There was also some talk of the most effective way to get the government’s message across. But the meeting is being widely regarded by special advisers as a bit of a bollocking from the Prime Minister.

Only about a year too late! Better late than never. Cameron was brilliant in opposition (apart from a couple of errors), but his initial PM-ship seems to have lost some steam in recent months and it feels like he isn't the same person he was in 2010. In 2010 the government and PM had loads of bold policies and they knew exactly what they were doing/where they were going, but now after many u-turns and infighting, everything's gone limp. Hope this is the start of a new chapter...

We love you Dave (in your dreams, mate")

It is good to remind colleagues that the leftist BBC together with its step siblings the Independent and The Guardian are ever on the prowl to spin against the Government. The BBC's newsreaders and would be presenters have become used to believing in their own publicity given the top 20 average in excess of £1 million per annum-one can become a real champagne socialist on that money.

Cameron promised to reduce the number of these advisors but he has failed, quickly going native once in government. I'm rather disappointed in this.

A briefed process story about how there is going to be an end to briefed process stories. And so the government (and its parasitic parrots') slow perfection of the art of cranio-proctal pseudoeroticism successfully concludes. Well done all.

Even the silly 'hamster' looking woman on Sky news every night and her pal Jon Craig cannot hide their joy whenever an anti coalition BBC/Guardian story breaks.
Bring on Fox news asap to get a bit of balance into broadcasting, the BBC has over 40% of news output.
If it's good enough for Murdoch, it should be the same for the BBC.

It's also good to remind people that commenters that use terms like "leftist BBC" are generally tin-foil hat wearing right wingers and consideration should be given to the fact that most of what they say is said whilst wearing blue tinted spectacles.

It's about time he banged a few heads together, there are too many silly own goals and are constantly on the back foot.

Every time I switch on the news, I see a Labour MP, they are not going to get any help from the MSM and should have been aware of this from the beginning. It's time David Cameron let some of the alpha males on the back benches lose to get after Labour.

Good on yer Dave!

It's a pity your party and the Lib Dems have to rely so much on these [all too often] "near teenagers"
It's good you have brought the Golden Oldies, Hesser and Young back to advise you on Industry and Regional Policy they had probably both made their first million well before some of the SPADS were born!

It's no good Cameron trying to pretend that the Coalition is united, and silence the critics.

This is a pantomime horse of a government, bolted together but trying to go in opposite directions. The head pulls one way; and the rear end digs its hoofs in and refuses to budge. Then the rear end tries to steer the front, pushing the whole thing off track.

The CONservatives aren't united under Cameron. He is leading a wet, pro-EU faction and the rest of the party is sidelined.

If it lasts until 2015 it will be a miracle.

"Cameron’s other main message was the importance of pressing the flesh. He stressed that backbenchers and the party needed to be kept happy." And the electorate? Remember them? The people with votes, where do they figure in all of this? Oh, silly me, I forgot. We aren't due an election for another few years and by then such distractions might well have been abolished.

Yes, keep them happy, like forcing a three-line whip on them as recently done, entirely unnecessarily.

What an fool Cameron is. To misquote, "A fool and his MPs are soon parted". Soon, hopefully.

If this is true (and not a SPAD-u-like dream of being important)then Dave, as he likes me to call him, needs to have a word with the Treasury about their relationship with every other department: if there's a nest of own-message spaddery, it's in their little fifedom.

The problem is a lot of the SPADS neither respect nor fear Cameron - sad but true

He is seen as not having much authority within the parliamentary party and a declining popularity amongst the electorate

This could have a negative impact on the reform agenda

Michael, yes, very odd. Even odder, Davey Dim was stupid enough to employ him as an election advisor, thereby cutting what should have been a gigantic majority to a pathetic near loss. Again, an appalling reflection on Davey Dim's judgement.
