Is Clegg about to do a left turn?

James Forsyth 12:12pm

Nick Clegg is the subject of The Independent’ s ‘You ask the question..’ feature today. His answer to this question is particularly interesting:

Who was a worse PM, Blair or Brown?
Saurav C, by email

Clegg: Blair was more wrong, Brown's more incompetent.

Now, I may be reading way too much into a pithy response but it rather suggests to me that Clegg is shifting his political positioning leftwards. It might be that this is in response to the stories about him becoming Home Secretary in a Tory government or he might have decided that given the current political environment, the Lib Dem's best chance of gains at the next election are in Labour seats.

I presume he is just commenting about Iraq - the great post war foreign policy failure.

It makes sense. Blair was competent but pursued a disatrous policy based on mistruths.

Or he might have just said what he thinks.

Kevyn, he's a Lib Dem, he doesn't think anything other than 'how can I maximise my share of the protest vote'?

So, what would David Davis, the Tory party's most consistent performer do?

Why should we even care? Clegg and his party are going nowhere

I trust he is moving leftwards, we already have two Tory parties, we need a counterbalance!

How on earth do you draw such a conclusion from that answer? This isn't "journalism" or "commentary", it's making things up as you go along.

Hint: Clegg's view of Blair being wrong might just have had something to do with Iraq, something the Tories seem not to like to be reminded about. Not exactly a left-right issue, more of a right-wrong issue.

I think you're crediting old Cleggover with a degree of political nous that he doesn't really possess. I'm ever more convinced that he's totally out of his depth. Brown may make the wrong decisions, but at least he makes them consistently!
