Obama: I will be the nominee

James Forsyth 7:23am

Hillary Clinton might not have conceded last night but Barack Obama now has the delegates he needs to be the nominee. He declared himself the nominee last night despite Hillary Clinton’s refusal to drop out. His immediate challenge is to usher her off the stage and re-unite the party. He started that task with generous praise for her last night and a speech that hit the Democratic high notes.

From Andrew Sullivan

"My grandfather, 86 years old and a veteran of WWII, just gave me a call. He was calling all of his grandchildren to let them know what an important night this was in the history of our country.

Grandpa drove a truck for over 50 years, and he told the story of how he drove with a team of drivers, 2 white (including him), and 4 black. When they stopped at the truck stops, the black drivers had to use seperate restrooms and showers, and had to eat in a small room in the back of the kitchen. Grandpa and his co-driver would eat in the back with the rest of the team, and while they didn't speak of it at the time, they knew it was wrong yet felt powerless to change it, and believed that it would never change.

Tonight, he told me, we have come full-circle. Many people, especially the younger generation who supported Obama, will never fully realize the historical import of what happened tonight. But he wanted his grandchildren to know this story that he had never told us, and it was the second time in my 33 years that I have heard my grandpa cry."

I know I'm a middle aged cynic but this nearly moved me to tears what other modern politician could provoke remarks of such heartfelt sincerity, pride in his country & a political candidate.

I love America

I'm so happy today I really think that this the start of something special. Obama is going to thrash McCain, the world is changing for the better I just wish with all my heart that I could vote for him.

What a speech.

Barack Obama the next President of The United States of America.

Obama will not win the real election.

He comes with too much sleazy and dangerous baggage.

Obama is a triumph of Sixth form flummery and feelgood rhetoric over substance. Perhaps America has convinced itself that this is what it wants to hear. The scale of disillusion after 12 months of an Obama win would be breath taking. And of course, there would be celebration in Tehran, Havana, Damascus, and of course, Pyong Yang.
