Saint Obama? Not quite...
Freddy Gray 11:10am
Will 2012 be a good year for Barack Obama? His job approval ratings reached a six-month
high this week on the back of news that had he had secured a payroll tax cut for American workers. He's also benefitting from the conclusion of the Iraq war and the fact that, with next week's Iowa
caucuses fast approaching, his Republican opponents look hopeless.
Obama's populist re-election message, in which he says, in effect, that he is the good guy and it is only the filthy Republicans and the corrupt Washington system holding him back, seems to be working. But should it? In this week's Spectator, I ask whether the Obama administration can really get away portraying the President as the 'fair shake' candidate. His record is much dirtier than his admirers like to admit. Here's a snippet for CoffeeHousers:
‘The Obama administration has repeatedly, at times scandalously, failed to practise what it preaches. Obama came to power saying that lobbyists “won’t find a job in my White House”, then he appointed dozens of them to his administration. On 21 January 2009, he introduced by executive order a new “ethics pledge” to bar what Washingtonians call “the revolving door” — the system whereby highly paid bureaucrats rotate between senior government posts and private-sector jobs in companies with an interest in talking to the government. “The pledge,” said Obama, “represents a clean break from business as usual’ and ‘will help restore faith in government”.
It didn’t. Senior White House staff have carried on swapping posts in his administration for fat salaries in the private sphere. In December last year, for instance, Peter Orszag, who served almost two years as Obama’s director of the Office of Management and Budget, became vice chairman of global banking at Citigroup, a role which, according to the Financial Times, would involve “dealing with clients and top government officials rather than running a business”. Another example is Cathy Zoi, who left her job as assistant secretary for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) at the US Department of Energy to work for a George Soros fund that invests in green energy. Soros is a major Democratic donor, as it happens.
At the start of his presidency, Obama — channelling the other Roosevelt, Franklin Delano — excited liberals with talk of a “Green New Deal”. The idea was that America could save the planet and make loads of money by becoming the world’s leader in environmentally friendly technology. To this end, the government diverted $16.8 billion towards EERE to fuel eco-innovation. Questions soon emerged about the integrity of EERE and Ms Zoi, however. Her husband was an executive at Serious Materials, a small window manufacturer which was reportedly the first green company to receive a stimulus cheque. The Obama administration also backed a dysfunctional green business called Solyndra to the tune of $535 million. It later emerged that several of Solyndra’s shareholders and executives had made generous donations to Obama’s presidential campaign.
Liberals find it easy to forgive sins committed in the name of protecting mother earth. It’s harder for them to excuse the fact that what was meant to be Obama’s great legislative achievement — healthcare reform — was undermined by his administration’s collusion with lobbyists. Obama’s initial bill contained amendments to stop the government over-paying for drugs through the federal health scheme, Medicare. Yet the White House soon dropped those clauses after it struck a deal with the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA), the leading lobby group for US drug companies. In exchange, PhRMA companies supported the bill, not least with lots of TV advertising.
Another much-trumpeted Obama reform was to introduce “net neutrality” laws. Far from being neutral, the rules hugely benefited web giants such as Google and Amazon.
All of which should make the idea of Obama as the “fair shake” President seem silly. Yet he is comfortable playing the folksy populist, and, remarkably, many Americans still buy into the act. His admirers — the vast majority of the US press corps among them — invested so much faith in Obama in 2008 that they cannot easily come to terms with his failings.’

I wish people wouldn't write about 'net neutrality' when they don't have a clear understanding of what it means.
I can only assume that Obama was informed by more learned people and quietly backed away from such a daft concept.
That paragraph could easily have been replaced with the far more pressing issue of the NDAA and indefinite detention without trial or charge.

on healthcare obama faced shrill opposition from the republicans and even right-wingers in his own party. they would never have accepted a public option. so he struck a deal with the healthcare industry that he wouldn't introduce a public option in exchange for their support on the rest of the bill. that's savvy negotiating. as a result 30 million americans will get coverage and the democrats passed a bill they've wanted for 50 years.
looking at the big picture, obama's failing has been on the economy. and considering the hospital pass he got from bush it's hardly surprising. coffee house is happy to blame labour for UK economic woes for the foreseeable future so i hope they give the same courtesy to the republicans. american voters certainly will.

December 30th, 2011 12:32pm Report this comment@ Axstane - the Republican field is relatively weak due to the 2006 wipe out, and due to many thinking they have a better chance in 2016. All that said every Primary race I can remember had a weakish field, all that matters is that it creates a viable candidate and in Romney they have that.
@ harry - that's a pretty daft analysis. The charges against Obama are that 1. he spent an age on his healthcare plan (which remains a mess) when the economy was all that was important. 2. He rammed through a massive stimulous that did nothing to drive the economy 3. His presidency for 3 years has been 100% focused not on improving the country but on his profile and re-election.
After running as a post-partisan uniter he will run for re-election with an ultra-partisan, cynical and negative campaign - so much for hope and change!

Obama won't have to lean very far left at all to seem reasonable and rational by comparison (and as he's repeatedly demonstrated, he isn't the left-wing radical the TP shrilly insists he is). His reversals on various issues dear to liberals won't matter to most voters and render him immune to Republican attacks. His family/tribe in Kenya are a bunch of wastrels, as are all the ones managed to sneak into the US. The illegal immigrant aunt and uncle,in Baltimore (why Baltimore?) who have been on the taxpayer teat (public housing and food stamps) since sneaking in, and have been served deportation orders two or three times, yet are, I believe, still rooted. There are a couple of brothers in the US illegally and working illegally ... one of them in a liquor store.
His family were anti-British during the Mau Mau manifestation.
The first official thing he did as President was send back to Britain a bust of Winston Churchill that had been a gift to our greatest ally from Britain. He is absolutely writhing with hatred, which is why he made common cause with FBI's former Number One Most Wanted, William Ayers. Leader of The Weathermen bombers. His campaign for the presidency was kicked off in the Chicago living room of William Ayers and his wife/cohort Bernadette Dohrn. It is also widely said that Ayers wrote his autobiography, "Dreams of My Father" for him. As vicious a crew as you could possibly wish for.
His half brother is called Obongo Obama. I think he's the gay one who would have come out of the closet if only he had had a closet.
I have seen Obama's Indonesian school registration (it's on the net) and under Religion, "Muslim" had been ticked. This isn't at all necessary in Indonesia, which is not a Islamic Republic.
This is the man, who, when a candidate for the Presidency of the United States, said the United States has 57 states.
Also there is an old aunt in Kenya somewhere who remembers Obama being born in her village.

The Obamarama has not published his birth certificate and indeed has gone to amazing lengths to keep it hidden ... even risking his bid for the presidency.
One reason he was so keen to have McCain as an opponent was that McCain was born on a US Naval Base in Panama, but naval and other US military bases are considered to be American soil. But Obama clearly had some idea of conflating this with his own unexplained circumstances. Just as he conflated his religion when he returned to the US from Indonesia on an Indonesian passport. (He later applied to an Ivy League for a Third Worlder grant. I think it was Harvard, but can't remember.) If he had been born in Hawaii, which had been accorded statehood at the time, why would he have applied for a Third World grant and where would he had got the Indonesian passport?

December 30th, 2011 10:18pm Report this commentMy point about Obama travelling back to the United States on an Indonesian passport is this: His mother had married an Indonesian and they were living in Jakarta. When her son was old enough to have his own passport, all she had to do was go down to the American Embassy, in Jakarta, with some photos in the required size and ... his BIRTH CERTIFICATE and he would have been issued a passport of the United States of America. The best passport in the world.
But she didn't. Hmmmmm.
Instead, she got her kid a Third World passport. Passing odd, that.
So Obama came back to, supposedly, the land of his birth on an Indonesian passport.

So he "returns" to the United States on an Indonesian passport. Later, he applies to an Ivy League, can't remember which one, for a grant as a "third world student".
Hmmmm.
And during his very bizarre presidential campaign, he claims to have visited "all 57 states". As we know, the US has 50 states, the last one to join being Hawaii. Date of birth seems to be a bit dodgy. Was it before or after Hawaii became a state, which was in 1959. Obama was supposedly born in 1961. Of course, he has no proof of that. If he had been born two years earlier, he would not be a natural born American citizen - and you have to be a natural born American to run for the presidency.

December 30th, 2011 10:53pm Report this commentJames writes: "That would be the same school record that names Honolulu as his place of birth, wouldn't it?"
What is recorded in the school records in Jakarta was information supplied by Obama's mother. He may well have been born in Hawaii, but two years before Hawaii became a state, meaning he would not have been elible to stand for the presidency of the US. US territories, like Guam, for example, and like Hawaii was before it became a state, are not part of the United States of America.
My personal theory is that Obama was probably born in Hawaii, while it was a territory, two years before it became a state, and was thus ineligible to run for the presidency.

December 31st, 2011 9:30am Report this commentThe canonisation of any politician is a straightforward matter. It merely requires the gagging of the Devil's Advocate. Who is more able to issue a gagging order than someone in government? So it is that whenever the character of Obama is discussed, his diabolical failings are simply glossed over. Take, for instance, the following quote from a statement by Obama in the Illinois Senate in 2001:
"whenever we define a previable fetus as a person that is protected by the equal protection clause..., what we're really saying is, in fact, that they are persons that are entitled to the kinds of protections that would be provided to a -- a child, a nine-month-old -- child that was delivered to term. That determination then, essentially, if it was accepted by a court, would forbid abortions to take place. I mean, it -- it would essentially bar abortions, because the equal protection clause does not allow somebody to kill a child".
Note the Freudian slip - Obama refers to a child carried to term as "a nine-month old" child, which of course it is, though a child's age is traditionally calculated from the moment it first becomes visible.
And note the purpose of this evil statement. To paraphrase it: "The equal protection clause does not allow somebody to kill a child, so we must withhold that protection when we want to kill".

So Kate called him a “s--t head”. He finished the second ticket and put it on the windshield with the first.

For a start, he's an adherent to Islam, which literally means submission and that doesn't sit well with freedom. He's a socialist - and we all know the greatest wilderness on the planet is the space between a socialists ears. Like the rest of his breed, he's bone idle - never has a President spent so much time on the golf course. And he's stupid. How many states are there in the US?
