Will Labour's expectations management spin be right again?

James Forsyth 6:25pm

Over at Red Box, Sam Coates reports that Labour is already lowering expectations for its performance in Henley, briefing that it will lose its deposit. Now, I’d be tempted to dismiss this as just spin seeing as Labour got 14.7 percent at Henley in the general but Labour’s expectations management predictions have turned out to be rather more accurate than they would have liked recently.

How can Noo-Lie-Bore ‘lower expectations’ any more than they already are?

However, we must be positive. The Beloved Leader will be there to shepherd and offer solace. And make all things right. Mz. Prudence will again use her astonishing formulae to prove a mighty victory, as at N&C. (Oh, and tractor production was up again in the previous month, whenever that was.)

I feel so much better already.

Will Gordo go to Henley to support his candidate ? I think not. That would be courageous.

This may also be a bonus to the Lib Dems who use it in their usual squeeze message.

They cannot expect to win merely by squeezing Labour votes though, there are too few. They need soft Tories to switch or stay at home.

It's strongly in Labour's interest to see the Conservatives limp home in Henley. Perhaps the Conservative campaign may craft a message out of that to motivate soft Tory voters?
