A Chris Huhne prediction that didn’t come true
James Forsyth 6:44pm
Chris Huhne attacked David Cameron for the EU veto in Cabinet back in December. At the time, one Cabinet minister told me that part of
Huhne’s critique was that Cameron had scuppered the chances of a Liberal Democrat MEP, Sharon Bowles, being reelected as chair of the European Parliament’s Economic and Monetary Affairs
Committee, which deals with financial services.
But Bowles has been reelected. In a Lib Dem press release welcoming this, Nick Clegg declares that:
Bowles’s victory is a reminder of how many of the doomsters predictions about what would happen to Britain after the veto have not turned out to be true. The sky has not fallen in.‘As party leader, I am proud that we have a leading Liberal Democrat in such a prominent and powerful position on the international scene. As UK Deputy Prime Minister, I am delighted and relieved to know that the EU financial services brief is in such expert hands.’

January 23rd, 2012 7:43pm Report this commentFabulous! Great news for Britain. A strongly pro-EU Lib Dem in charge of a committee which, along with the even more unaccountable Council has 'responsibility for such matters as the economic and monetary policies of the EU, taxation and competition policies, free movement of capital and the regulation of financial services (banks, insurance, pension funds, asset/fund management, accounting, international monetary and financial systems etc.)'
The odious Huhne must be feeling a right ninny and Well Done dave!
Rejoice Rejoice!

January 23rd, 2012 7:49pm Report this commentWe should be grateful for Mr. Clegg's assurance that the Chair of the European Parliament’s Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee is "such a prominent and powerful position on the international scene". Otherwise, ignorant sceptics might have had the temerity to wonder what the European Parliament actually knows or does about economic and monetary affairs, or to make ribald comparisons with bean-counters, cheese-tasters and lollipop ladies. We doubting Thomases have certainly been put in our place.
And to think that a British Liberal Democrat has risen to such dizzying heights of influence and prestige! Baroness Ashton had better look to her laurels...

Or is this the problem that will remain hidden, covered in bulls*it until too late - again?

January 24th, 2012 4:49pm Report this comment" ... As UK Deputy Prime Minister, I am delighted and relieved to know that the EU financial services brief is in such expert hands.’" So the UK's financial contribution is about to rise again, is it? I'd prefer a UKIP MEP in that position, myself!
