Chris Huhne charged by the CPS

Peter Hoskin 10:01am

The CPS was building up to a bang, not a whimper, after all: the Director of Public Prosecutions has just announced that Chris Huhne and Vicky Pryce will have criminal charges brought against them for 'perverting the course of justice'. Both will appear in court on 16 February.

We have not yet heard from the minister himself, although there are reports that he will resign to ‘clear his name’, etc. And even if he didn't volunteer to leave, all signs are that Cameron and Clegg will act on the advice of the cabinet secretary and shunt him out anyway. And his replacement? As it stands, the Lib Dems' Ed Davey is the favourite to take over at DECC in a limited reshuffle.

UPDATE:
You can watch and read Keir Starmer's statement here.

That's made my day :-)

Apologies to Starmer (not that he made the decision).

Pete, You've obviously been watching Dr Strangelove recently - the demented Air Force General Rimmer asks Peter Sellers if he's a 'Prevert'..but the usual word is 'Pervert'.

Goodo. Trouble is, there'll still be a minister in charge of the witch craze that is 'climate change,' as defined by fake science and lying politicians.

Whatever the truth of the matter, it is surely good news that it is still possible in this country for a cabinet minister to be charged with perverting the course of justice.

Naturally, I presume he is innocent. Glad he will have the chance to clear this up in court.

Wonderful, - but unexpected - given the ‘judicial’ whitewashes given us from the era of the Hero of the H2B onwards. Suggest

1. Abolish the post, - NOW! No need for all the climate change guff or anyone to promote it, thank you!

2. Abolish the fuel tariff scam - which rips us off (unless we have wind farms)

3. Hold the feet of the H2B to the fire until he agrees to a sensible - and necessary - fuel and power policy.

4. Continue the precedent, - bring all the other suspect current and past members of Parliament to account for their um . . . . peccadilloes

Lets hope his replacement is somebody who thinks the elderly should be able to heat their homes rather than subsidise his windmill owning friends.

So Huhne gets due process but Hester gets nobbed by a bunch of faceless bureaucrats. I know I know not the same thing at all...

Now they have to find a jury of 12 people who haven't done the same thing in their lives at some time and who hate politicians more than speed cameras. Tricky.

Not a very satisfactory explanation for the delay, I'm afraid. Merely indicates (a) the inefficiency of the process, or (b) the stultifying interference of the government when one of their own is accused.

I hope they use Gudio's illustrated diagram of the time frame of events in the allegation as an evidential visual aid. Wonderful!

I am delighted to eat my words of yesterday.

The appalling thing is that these petty crooks hold on to office until the last possible moment.

He was the most unpopular Cabinet member and the most disloyal Minister. He will not be missed.
